The Moonwatch doesn’t need any introduction here on Fratello (in case it does, go here), but this doesn’t apply to everyone. Like this guest on BBC’s Antiques Roadshow. The BBC aired a new episode of Antiques Roadshow yesterday evening. One of the guests bought a Speedmaster Professional pre-Moon watch at a car boot sale. When […]

I think the whole thing was a put up job, the owner claims to have no knowledge of the significance of the Omega Speedmaster ? yeah rock on . Even a basic internet check would have highlighted its importance and value.

Paying £ 5 for it at a car boot sale - My backside - IMHO a total sham. Great TV but totally false.

RJ did you look at the pushers? That was no 145.012 (or 145.022 either). The AR ‘expert’ may not have been all that expert.

They looked a bit short, might be 105.012. I guess these experts are valuations guys for lots of stuff.

Well, I do believe a lot is scripted on TV. But looking at the guy, he didn't appear to me as someone who googles his knowledge either.. ;-)

He looks just the type to have googled it, he certainly had the sense to pitch up at the AR and put it under the Experts nose !

TBH it looks like a put up job to me, I wager the owner had a pretty good idea he had something valuable in his mits.

A lot of these older experts have much more knowledge on clocks and perhaps pocket watches. They’ve got into wrist watches as the see a more dynamic market with good possibilities for earning. So they don’t always know a lot on anything vaguely “modern”.

I agree with your first part, although, I would say that a pre-moon Speedy is definitely a 'vintage' watch.

Sorry but not a put up job, the AR back room team identify potential story items and then the experts see the goods, this is clearly admitted to by the medals expert on the same program, the research is then done before the owner goes on TV and the expert does his piece to camera.

The owners don't know what value the expert will give until the piece is being recorded, in theory this gets the best reaction from the owner unless of course the owner is clued up which they often are.

In this case the reaction looked too good to be a set-up, especially as he was willing to sell for £500, i'd have bought it for that.

It is - Just bear in mind that the auction house clock experts are often specialists in Antiquarian Horology - and consider anything made in the last century as modern! :D
