Introduced in 1967 as a successor of the Speedmaster 105.012, with new pushers and a new case back (non stepped). Besides the 105.012 (Armstrong and Aldrin’s watches), the 145.012 was worn by Apollo astronauts (Apollo 11’s Michael Collins for example). In terms of technical specifications, the Omega Speedmaster Professional 145.012 is the last model that had a caliber 321 movement. Agreed, the comments are better than the original letter and a lot of the IWC response... e.g. I like this one: "Keep in mind the original letter was written by a guy who wasn't satisfied with Jennifer Aniston, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Minka Kelly, Jessica Simpson, Rhona Mitra, etc. I'm pretty sure this guy can't be satisfied." Hilarious.
I like Hodinkee inserting the "(not this)" in the letter after John mentions Keith Richards wearing a IWC watch......to then link to the Zenith Rolling Stones tribute watch. Quite a difference.
Back to the subject at hand... The 145.012-67. This is the watch that got me started, and its the only one in my small but growing collection that I consider priceless and irreplaceable. It was my grandfather's, and thankfully now mine, and one day it will go to my eldest son. This piece makes me feel connected to my past, honored that I've been given such a fine gift, and obligated to care for it as my grandfather and father did. It has definitely been the reason my interest has been mostly focused on Speedmasters. I hope to add another generation of gentle history to my '67 Speedy.
Thank you @yinzerniner , yes the dial and lume are really spectacular, the picture doesn't lie. One reason I put it on the brown leather strap, instead of using the original 1039 bracelet (which I have), is because it's a great pairing with that creamy patina of the dial and lume.
Looks perfect, and a great story to boot. Although my Speedy is t historically significant in the same way as the earlier calibres, I hope it'll be with the family for a long time to come!
