Mates, does anyone know until when Omega used Tritium for the Speedmaster Hands&Dials? Did they change to Luminova in 1997 or later?

About 1997 or 1998, yes. Hands and dials were likely switched over at the same time.

..okay, assumed it would be around that "border", thx. So buying a set that has been pulled from a '97 might be a gamble if i wanted Tritium.
The seller isn't sure what it is, he might never thought about it until i asked him lume colour questins 😀

Have you seen pictures? It should be very easy to distinguish tritium from luminova at a glance.

If only it said on the dial which material it was. Maybe a T for Tritium or something...

The pictures are as pictures are when you don't pay attention to details that are important...because you don't know they are 😀
might need to lead him neatly to take lume shots. .

Huh? 😵‍💫

What are the pictures of exactly? Again you should be able to tell immediately. Tritium lume will have turned a burnt orange color, whereas superluminova is basically white (sometimes with a slight green tint).

Not necessarily, tritium takes time to degrade so we wouldn't necessarily see the same hue on late '90s hands that we would on late '60s hands. Many of the first 3570.50s, which still had tritium dials and hands, still have white lume.

Odd my original-76 has green tinted original tritium lume...

Tritium can age a few different way depending on humidity, temp range and light exposure.

sorry guys, was on a plane. And yes, it's hard to tell from lumen colour alone especially when the hands are that "young" + bad pictures on top.

Thanks for your extensive input on my tiny question!

I stand corrected, honestly did not know that. Sorry for the incorrect info OP. I guess I just assumed based on the fact that the majority of old tritium dials fade to around the same hue.

Cool -76! I would have certainly guessed luminova had Omega not helpfully printed those T's on the dial. 😁

Oddly I purchased this one from @abrod520 and you quoted both of us. I can assure you that this is tritium and it behaves correctly by a quickly fading glow after exposure with basically zero glow after 10 seconds. There are other examples out there of tritium that has aged this way, but they are not as common as the more usual brown/yellow, its not exactly rare either. Tritium after about 8 years on a watch is not working at all just so you know.

Thanks for the complement on it, I can assure you that in person it looks even better, the lack of puffy lume and no "moss" pops it. The bezel in person has an amazing warmth to it that is not conveyed in pictures at all, in pictures it looks beat up, in person it is a warm ghosted bezel with a nice fade from the inside to the outside and the scratches are not as prominent.

Didn't that happen with changeover to the 1861 movement (1997) ?

I think yes, but from what I understand there was a small transition period where some 1861 Speedys got tritium dials.
