Skinner auctions near Boston has a Speedy up for grabs at the end of the month. I'm not knowledgeable in Speedies of any kind but the estimated sale price of $800-1200 seems rather low. What do you guys think it will go for? Michel
This one is the grand daddy of automatics though, the Chuck Maddox "Holy Grail"... a cal.1045 based, moon watch cased Speedmaster Automatic. These usually sell between $5K-$10K depending on condition.
A lot of auction houses whose specialty is fine and decorative arts, don't know much about watches. They most likely took this in as part of an estate, and hourly employee who knows nothing about watches saw that Speedy automatics sold on ebay for $800-1200. And this is why we love auction houses! Shit flies under the radar...
Heh, I guess subconsciously I was trying to prove I should have been the one to win the "annoying rookie" award
Here's a newbie question regarding SpeedMasters: what is the main difference between the one above and a "Professional"? (Besides price..)
The Professional is a manual wind watch that uses the Cal 1861 which superceded the 861 which superceded the Cal 321. The watch above uses another Lemania based movement which is automatic. Professionals don't have dates. Other than that, the Cal. 1045 in the OP watch is a bit taller.
The watch went for $6500 A Universal Geneve Tri-compax went for $14,000 A Tornek-Rayville TR-900 Dive Watch went for $92,500
I think these auctions put prices low to attract more buyers. They know that a lot of people are searching for the bargain constantly.
