    Dear all,

I am new to the forum but have an interest in vintage Speedies for quite a while now. I have been offered a 2998-6 which I am quite excited about. However, there is one aspect of it which I am not sure about. It seems to have the correct dauphine minute and hour hands. However, the subdial hands are straight and unpainted. Similarly, the chrono second hand is straight and unpainted. Of what I read, I thought that the subdial hands should be painted straight hands and the chrono second hand should be an arrowhead painted one.
However, maybe I am wrong and, therefore, I just wanted to ask the experts on the forum.

    Thanks,

    Boris

All of the subdial hands should be straight. They would be painted, however the paint may in some cases be cleaned off. The Chrono hand should be a spearpoint and was painted originally.

The hands should look like this originally. 3084s.jpg

image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg Here is the watch in question...while I like the look, the wrong hands are a concern. Are these so rare that it is advisible to go for it?

The watch was offered to me for about $9000. Is that an OK price or what would be a right price for a watch in this condition?

Great. Thanks a lot. I felt it was too much but being a newbie to the vintage Omega world, I rather wanted to ask for advice. I will hold off and continue my quest for a 2998, 105.002 or 105.003.

    Thanks,

    Boris

I've been looking at the "Moonwatch Only" book and against the 2998-6 it does list 2 hand variations, one being the variant in cicindela's post, the other being " Configuration B3. Alpha - Variant 3" which is the style you have but in white. So perhaps they are correct and just been cleaned of their original finish? I should add, that I am in no way an expert, and I bow to cicindela's knowledge and expertise.

The handset may be replacements. The minute hand looks to be a bit short. It should reach the sub indices. The sweep second hand is also a bit short. The crown is a modern replacement. I think the pushers may be also. Spacefruit is the pusher expert. He can spot replacements way better than I can. Here is my 2998-5

The watch was apparently checked at the Swiss Omega museum for authenticity and found to be OK. But the "shortness" of the minute hand was also somthing I was wondering about after having read the Speedmaster101.com info.
The seller stated that the 2998-6 is one of the rarest 2998s - is that correct?
Nevertheless, given the case condition (quite polished in my humble opinion) and the high price, I will probably hold off this example and wait for a better one.

    Thanks,

    Boris

So, beautiful examples of 2998s are out there! That is reassuring to know. May I ask how long it took most of you to find these pieces and do you have any advice where to look for them? So far, I tried this forum, Chrono24, Ebay (given that I am not an expert not my first choice as I might fall for a Frankenwatch) and some online vintage dealers I stumbled on during google searches.

    Thanks,

    Boris

My experience so far for just about any highly collectible item? "ya find 'em where ya find them"

Know it when you see it, cause the next person will, and then it is too late.

I've yet to find my 321, going on 3 years now.

First, decide what you want and how much you're willing to pay for it. Check the usual suspects daily. When you see it get it. Easier said than done.
