I'd like to know if in your opinion my Speedmaster from 1978 (with extract) can be considered "Excellent" grade or just "Very Good".

I compared all parts with MWO and as far as I can tell everything is period-correct.

It looks OK but the hands are G- at best based on the colour of fade and paint loss IMO. Those could be changed though. The dial looks very nice but I note the back and bezel show minor marks. The condition of the mid case and whether the contours are still all correct will be a big factor in the overall value but I suspect any higher than VG would be very optimistic, with G+ how it looks at present.

If you want a detailed "grading", then you need to post more (and better pictures).
Showing the dial, case, casebook etc from different angles.

@padders has pretty much written exactly what I was going to say.

From what I can see on limited pictures:
Dial VG
Hands F/G
Bezel G
Case?

More pictures. The case has some dings, but barely noticeable with naked eyes.

So, certainly this watch has not been in a safe for 50 years. It shows traces of use. I agree with your evaluation. I've seen a couple of almost NOS examples (this one is definitely not), I just wanted to understand this grading scale.

It’s still hard to be sure from those pics but I would say it’s good or possibly good-very good. Certainly not excellent.

As a comparison I have this -71 which I’d only rate as Very Good. But, how the scale is applied is subjective.

I tried to highlight all the defects in my pictures. Of course a good photographer could present it better, and even better than it really is (and maybe get a higher grade) but this was not the scope of my request 😉

Thank you all for your valuable opinions.

Yep I agree. That reinforces my feeling that on the SP101 scale that's a Good category watch which could be pushed towards VG by a hand replacement. Certainly not VG or EX at present. The 1171/633 bracelet and end links add value (the SP101 price is for head only) but only a few hundred bucks as they are plentiful and one of the cheaper vintage designs. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder as ever, but those hands can't objectively be described as beautiful.

Sorry for being a bit picky....

But on the dial - is this dirt or marks...??

As far as I remember when removing the glass, the dial was flawless. Some dirt is hard to avoid.

Don't get me wrong here....The watch is very nice!
But trying to ask for a grading is very hard, and I do think that both @padders and @Davidt have been generous with the grading.
Enjoy your watch, and don't think so much about Very Good/Excellent etc...!

To me, my watch can be rated good / very good, depending on various factors, so I totally agree with others valuations. What made me curious was the announcement I linked above, which is described as very good +. So I wanted to understand better the criteria for rating. Beside the subjective feelings, and the fact that naked eyes don’t see all the small things that appear in high definition pictures, I think that for these ‘70s speedmasters it’s not hard to arrive at a quite objective grading.

For me, to be excellent, the dial has to hold up under a 10x loupe.

that means no blotches or marks on the dial surface. I expect the lume to be free of black spots, or chipping or dirt.

when looking at an Excellent dial, I often spend quite a long time surfing around through the loupe, not finding anything to criticise. The moment you see a fault, it drops out of Excellent.

In order to arrive at a meaningful, useful and accurate grade, one has to be ruthless when thinking of allocating an excellent grade. If I am not ruthless, then the grade becomes devalued and meaningless.

I have handled perhaps five speedmasters that are truly Excellent.

I have highlighted two marks that would knock this dial out of excellent. There are others.

Ruthless
