    Hi,

I've been looking around here for a little while and I hoped someone might be able to help me out with dating a Speedmaster Pro? I've researched and found that the serial number would help but am many hours from any kind of town that might have a jeweler/watch expert, and I read that an expert might be able to give us a bit of an idea by looking at it. It's my husband's watch and was purchased from a vintage watch specialist in Brisbane, however they've changed ownership and don't have records.

I'd really appreciate any help! TIA

    That's a nice watch, model 145.022-69, made in 1969-70.

    Hope it helps.

PS: Assuming that everything inside is consistent with the outside. Sometimes parts are cobbled together, this doesn't count.

It looks like a bit of an adulterated watch to me. Case back suggests pre moon ie before 1967 but dial doesn't fit that age. Could be a service dial. Chrono hand probably replaced as have crown and possibly pushers. Bezel from much earlier model if it's real. If it is real it could be valuable but odd to see one on this later piece.

Just my thoughts but hopefully some more experienced members chime in here.

It's hard to be sure from the pictures whether the dial has a step. If it does it is most likely to be a '69 with an incorrect bezel. However, it could also be a out tigether watch. In this instance, an inner case back and movement is required to confirm.

The good news in that the bezel is incorrect but worth several thousand.

Everything visible on the outside, including dial, bezel, hands, caseback, crowns and pushers, is consistent and correct for the - 69 model.

The dial does have the step if you look closely, but even without seeing it, its design characteristics only exist on the - 69 and - 71. The - 71 doesn't have that case back or that bezel.

The bezel is correct for the early -69, and so is the case back.

PS: I did overlook the Base 1000 on the bezel, which is worth several times the whole watch.

im not sure if that bezel is even correct for that watch... but base 1000 would fetch alot of $$$ in todays market. how much did you pay?

Vintage watch specialist in Brisbane (my town) I'm guessing is Brisbane Vintage Watches but I can't understand how they would have let it go with the BASE1000 bezel still on it.

Either one of the staff screwed up badly or it was bought a long time ago before Speedmasters became that popular.

Thanks everyone for your input and help... I've already learnt a lot! I am definitely looking to sell it and now trying to decide between selling as is, or selling the bezel seperately. Decisions!

I think you should sell the bezel separately, but I'm sure you have already received a lot of private messages ;)

It's skirting around the rules here, and there are risks to buy and sell to mostly unknown people on the net and in the dark.

Also FYI, one member here bought a BASE 1000 bezel alone several months back for exactly US $10K. It was in much worse condition and does not have the brown tint like yours - people call it chocolate or tropical and pay through the nose for this shade/patina. Put it up on bidding open to the whole wide world, and you could potentially get double that or more.

The rest of the watch looks nice also, but you need pictures of the inside to know what you're selling.
