If you were a hoarder of Speed in 2001 you've done very well. Better than the S&P 500 by a multiple of 10. Source: http://chronomaddox.com/pay.html --- I recently stumbled across the previously closed auction of a beautiful 321 (can't recall the reference) with B&P ...completely full set, which sold for, I think it was just under 3000 USD? But this was waaay back in 2014.
Someone could have purchased a collector grade example from every single Speedmaster reference ever made for less than the price of one 2915 today, and that's only 15 years ago!!
Intresting to see how prices have gone up but at the same time, I think the focus should be on buying watches one likes and not worry about possible future values. I have no idea if I have thrown quite a few thousand quid after watches that will be worth sweet FA in 15 years time or will allow me to retire to a carrabean island surrounded by naked dancing girls tickling my fancy on demand. No matter, I enjoy wearing every peice I have and that is the main reason for collecting watches.
If only my late father knew back in the 60's that all this stuff would be worth a fortune now im sure he would have been sat on a pile of Speedmasters etc seen as he was an AD here in the 60's!
I think you still would have been better off financially investing your $7K in Apple stock in January 2001 than a 2915. But the 2915s are narrowing the gap!
I keep kicking myself that I didn't buy a mid-80s - early 90s Speedy when it was at Tourneau about 7 years ago in their pre-owned section - for $1100.
Well in the words of Georgie Best (for our US cousins - well known UK football player of the 60s and 70s who was a bit of a lad) I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.
