Speedmaster outclassed by it’s own strap?

Wearing my recently devalued Speedmaster today on this splendid, semi-custom strap. Black with red stitching.

I got this strap, a Jean Rousseau, about three years ago at an Omega Boutique event, when I bought my SMP. The JR folks had a rep on site that was hawking free straps with the purchase of a watch. You could customize within reason: material, stitching color, monogram, buckle, and such.

I didn’t know at the time that JR was kind of a big deal, relatively speaking. I tend to wear my watches pretty hard, again, relatively speaking, so the strap went into my bag of Omega goodies. There it stayed for three years, but about a week ago, I busted it out and slapped it on the Speedy. No sense in having a thing you don’t use.

Naturally, I wouldn’t have done this if I’d known my Speedmaster was going to be utterly worthless in a short time, thanks to Swatch. Then, I noticed something else: the strap is BRANDED AS OMEGA!

Good heavens! They’ve been devaluing the brand this whole time.

Truly, though - the strap is so nice and fancy looking, I almost can’t wear it, and in a way, it unbalances my personal feeling of the Speedmaster aesthetic. I mean, it looks nice. Super nice. But for the first time, I’m concerned about wearing my watch as I normally would, and it’s because of the the dang strap, of all things. I’m afraid to mess it up. Hashtag First World Problems, to be sure.

Anybody else ever had their whole watch vibe thrown off kilter by the addition of a strap that was too nice?

Lovely strap! I paid $800 for my ‘72 Speedmaster 20 years ago so if it plummets to $270 ($10 more than the Moonwatch) I’ve only paid $40/yr for the pleasure of owning it.
Bring on the plummet! Maybe I can finally afford the trilogy.

Gosh, I’d love to have a Speedmaster and/or a Sub from that era. The absolute height of what those watches were really all about and real badges of the folks who owned and USED them. Fantastic. Forty a month for tangible history you can use? Not too bad at all.

Straps can certainly add a lot to a watch.

Tweed!! Where did you get the tweed?!?!
It's from combat straps but looks very different as a strap compared to this;

I’m also wearing my bear market Speedy today since it’s the last day I’ll be able to text my friends and family about what a savvy investor I am.

(Edit: sorry for the lack of strap content, but I just had a lunch beer and I’ve been waiting all day to make this snarky comment somewhere)

I have made poor life choices. I cry myself to sleep now and wake up in cold sweats thinking about the Mission to Uranus.

Your watch has not been devalued.

Many watch companies including Patek i believe outsource production of leather straps to high end makers.

The only watch that I'm careful with because of the strap is my JLC Master Ultra Thin Moon and only because everything associated with this watch is so friggin' expensive. But I do love it so. 😀

I believe he's referring to the users who think the MoonSwatch is going to devalue Omega... whoever those blokes are.

The same people who consider watches an “investment”. If you use the word “devalue” when referring to watches, then it’s pretty clear what the priorities are.

I doubt that the MoonSwatch is going to destroy the Omega brand.
