Speedmaster Mk III in need of TLC

Hi all, couple of quick questions (hopefully)...

I just picked up a Speedmaster MkIII (common D3 dial) at an auction that needs a bit of love - it's on a terrible aftermarket strap and the crystal is cracked, but it's running well and I think I love it already.

What's the correct strap for the 176.002? is it the 1162?

Also, the bezel on the watch doesn't say "Tachymetre", it says "Gradue Pour 15 Pulsations" - does this mean the bezel was replaced at some point?

Cheers,

Ed

Sure, they'll probably help 😀

The metal link bracelet is what it came on, the leather one was one I had here so I could try it on my wrist and see how it was keeping time.

The gasket on the back had turned to sludge, so it's probably some time since it was serviced. The case is pretty banged up, I'm not sure if it's been intentionally polished or just wear and tear, but I can't even tell what orientation the original sunburst finish was.

The serial number is 3424xxxx, so I'm not sure if it's a 1972 or 1973 watch? seems to be '73 according to this site.

Congratulations! I love it too!
In my humble opinion, the important thing is the dial and the hands, which look in very good and original condition. The tritium has nice patina.

The case condition is poor, but most cases i see are either poor or refinished. There were some nos cases for sale on ebay and you can always refinish. But if you use it daily, it will collect scratches anyways because the case is so high.

The two things that need replacement are the crystal and the bracelet.
Mine has a 1162 bracelet.
About the pulsations counter i have no knowledge. I know that it existed but i have not compared yours to the ones that can be found on the internet.

Enjoy your watch!

The pulsations ring is the 'medical' bezel, right? For timing heart rate?

Thanks, I did see the NOS cases for sale and I'm tempted to get one just to have, but as you say, the case is prone to dings because of the height, I have already clipped it on a couple of things because it's much higher than my other watches... so i'd be inclined to replace the crystal and find a 1162 bracelet and see how I get on with the case as is for a while to get used to it.

I agree that the main thing is the face \ hands and movement and they all seem to be in good condition so I'm happy about that - I know neither is a great option, but is it generally better to refinish the original case or to replace it? i think the cost would be similar?
