I've been looking at adding a second watch to my collection, and I love the look of the Speedmaster Mk III. I think it's very unusual and would make a great casual watch.

I've seen this one for sale for £2,200 (US$3,150). Is this a bargain? Over priced? On the money? Are there any concerns that jump out at you that I should be asking more questions about?

I've seen it in the flesh (my own pic at the bottom), so have spotted the light cosmetic damage to the glass, case and bracelet.

    Thanks in advance!

    Gary

I'm genuinely not an expert on prices but that seems steep. I suggest you check the results section of watches of some auction houses such as knightsbridge, Bonhams, Christies etc and compare.

Do you know if it's been recently serviced by someone who knows what they're doing?

From the dirt I'd take a punt on not...

That's a little high for a watch with an unknown history.

Is this dealer or private sale?

Watch is nice and original in my opinion ..nice dial , clean movement doesn't feature oxydations , correct bracelet even if needs to be refinished . But think little bit overpriced although serviced...

It is from a dealer, and I accept it may need a bit of cleaning up. I did jump on the auction results pages but it seems like trying to find a needle in a haystack! A quick check on Chrono24 (accepting that, well, that it is Chrono24!) seems to pitch the market rate for these at about £1,500-1,800.

On this basis, I think I'll pass (or maybe try a cheeky bit of haggling!). Thanks for the responses team :)

A nice looking mk111 at the January W of K auction (lot 85) went for a bid of £900 + commission, so just over £1000 I think.
That would be the price I'd expect to pay. Then add service costs, max £300-£400 and you have a good piece for about £1300.

I think that's at the cheap end of the market tbh. - and an Omega Authorised service runs to £550 on one of these.

Things to bear in mind if you're looking for a fixer-upper, the internal tachy bezel, and the needle point hour hands are NLA.

£1500-£1800 seems to be the mid point for a good watch, due a service.

I was thinking of an STS service, which is excellent, or maybe even less at a decent local watchmaker and I think both those choices would be less than £550. However, Cheap or not it shows that they are there for around that price.

£550 was what STS charged me. ;)

And yes they are around... You'll just either be really lucky, or not, depending on what you end up with. :)

Wow it's gone up a lot since I last had a speedy with them and thinking about it now it was a long time. Oh well.

It's the automatic chronograph calibres... I've had a few done, and they're about £150 more than a cal 861 from memory.

It's not the best example of a MKIII I have seen. And the price is a bit too high. I think a 9 out of 10 piece can fetch around €2000-€2200. This one is a 7 out of 10 in my opinion.

Been away for a while so belatedly picking up the thread here. Thanks to all for your insights, very helpful. Interestingly (or not), price has now dropped to £1,950.

Out of interest, @tyrantlizardrex , what does NLA mean? I'm assuming it's something to do with not being original, given the context?
