Hi all.
This is a weird one, my -68 just came back from a service and I noticed a black dot on the 10 o'clock lume. It is barely noticeable on the wrist.
Is this a mold spot? Anyone seen this type of patina?

Did you share photos with watchmaker ? Seems pretty small issue if only visible at high mag

I figured it didn't have anything to do with the service but I did share the pics a few days ago.

He just got back to me and said it is most likely some debris from the dial (there was tons of debris inside the case) that migrated its way to the lume plot.

Kind of odd especially if it came back from a service. My first thought is did the watchmaker not thoroughly clean the case (ultrasound bath) and make sure there wasn't any dust or debris before final assembly? If that showed up on the dial, wonder if something might do the same on the movement side as well.

Yeah the rest of the watch is clean. The watch had never been serviced (some remnants of the red sticker on the caseback) so I think the gasket disintegrated inside the case.
Just bad luck for a piece to fall there.

Without my glasses I probably would not have noticed.

Some bad news. Removing the dot removed some lume along with it.

Guess I haven't learned my lesson of leaving things well enough alone. ::facepalm1::

Oh well, not the worst thing to be the first to ruin a near NOS watch.

Time for a deep breath….
The little black dot that bothered you is gone, along with a tiny lume divot only visible with loupe. There is another small missing lume bit at 6:00 marker. You have not changed the grade of your nice watch at all, imo.
So no harm done enjoy your watch!!

You're probably right, thank you.

On hindsight, I should have left it as is, I think the lume loss is more noticeable than the dot was.

To be fair I thought removing it wouldn't damage the lume plot as much as it did.

I think I'll need to stow this speedy away for a while until the sting disappears.

Did you try Rodico for the initial removal?

Not sure how my watchmaker did it. Rodico would make sense though.

Either way I imagine removing it was incredibly difficult.

I can barely tell the time on my watch without readers, let alone see a tiny lume dimple.

Haha yeah it's splitting hairs. I tend to go a little too far with the perfectionism.
Another lesson learned.

Speedmaster hiatus for now. 😁

Its a beautiful example, sorry that happened! Things like that are good exercise is letting it be, as you are experiencing now.
Its likely the watchmaker tried with Rodico and it didn't pull off so they went with something a bit more intense like tweezers and chipped it to successfully remove it.
Still an excellent example 😀 I wish you peace with the crater.

Absolutely! My watchmaker offered to remove it and I couldn't help it haha.
I figured at most it would be a small indent not a crater.
Thank you!
