And frankly, other than the Maddox coined name and the somewhat rarity of it (rarer than most but easier to find than a proper 2998-2), I don't get the Grail status of that watch. Price wise, it's cheaper than a new Speedmaster Coaxial (not that I would want that either). It's not the first Speedmaster Automatic or Date.

For me a proper 2998-2 is much more the Speedmaster Grail. Soapbox out.

But then again in the watch world, to each his/her Grail and as we know they're just a stepping stone to the next watch you can't find and can't afford, yet.

    Totally agree to you..

I just saw something very interesting
The perfect Grailwatch that was sold for 5900€ on ebay Germany in December is also listed on chronocentric since a couple of days...the seller wants 7900€...thats ridiculous!

Selling it not even 3 weeks later for 2k more and announcing it as "my last Grail watch" is kind of a rip off in my opinion.

I can only recommend - don't buy for these prices..! there are some people out there making a lot of profit with "us"

..In comparison to the grail the 2998-2 is at least worth its price..

Why? 10x a 2998 for me to be honest.

With all due respect to Chuck Maddox, I just don't get this "grail" at all... sure, its hard to find, but that only counts if you are looking for it :D I'm with you guys, I'll take a 2998, or early Speedy Pro any day of the week.

Much easier to find and buy than similar 2998s and 2915s in excellent original condition. I personally prefer a 2998 as well over this watch anytime - better to me as a collector and also better as an investment.

I do want sword hands for the chronograph though. I need my 2998 to have a lot of visual differences with my 145-022 69 transitional. Thus 2998-2

Ok the haters are on a rant. woo hoo
    I love the 2998 and the 376
But please tell me how many 2998's were made
    from 1959-1962?
And speaking of service dials and hands
, most of the 376 out there have them, because
the lume fell off a lot of them. Guessing maybe 500-600 left
    in original condition.

Top notch 2998s are less plentiful and certainly less available than 376s at least from what I have observed.

And to put it simply. I could have bought 4 decent 376 this year (one very recently) and I have yet to find an original 2998-2 for under $15k

Not surprised - 2998-1 and -2s are almost as hard to locate as 2915s (maybe just as hard).

I like my 376, but I like wearing it.. I didn't buy it for the safe. As a wearer, it's a great watch. Readability is great, very functional - day, date, am/pm, sweep minute, all great functions. Of all the speedies I have tried or looked at, it is my fav... but then, I bought one - all original - in not the best shape. I was fine with the price I paid for the watch I got (and I certainly didn't pay €8000!) and didn't take a really minty one out of rotation for those that do want them in the safe. ;)

As beautiful as a 2998 is, I probably won't get one as I don't have a handy watchmaker yet and I fear that I would never be able to treat one the way it deserves to be treated.
