What are everyone's thoughts on choosing between two possible Speedys:

    1. A 1981 (birth year) ref. 145.022, or
    2. An early to mid-90s ref. 3590.50

This would be my first Speedy investment (and first real step into the vintage market).

The idea of having a birth year watch appeals for sentimental reasons, and I can see it would have greater cachet as the more "vintage" choice.

On the other hand... I'm drawn to a 3590.50 by the prospect of having pre-Superluminova patina but still a more contemporary (so, hopefully, better aesthetic and mechanical condition) piece.

Although... when all's said and done, maybe there's nothing very special about a 20-year old watch.

From what I've seen, the same budget (anywhere between $2,000 and $3,000) would get a great example 3950 or a good, if not great, 145.

Am I missing something here? Any other factors I should be weighing up?

All thoughts, tips and advice greatly appreciated. Relatively new here, but loving the forum. Thanks everyone.

I'd go for the 145.022 birthday one. More vintage and sentimental to you.

I'd definitely go for the '81. I could be wrong but the early 80's may have been a lean time for Speedmasters. There seems to be a large number from the 70's followed by a dip in numbers in the 80's and then an increase again in the 90's.

    Maybe the quartz effect?

Either way, I'd definitely go for the earlier one. If that one falls through, even earlier examples with the 861 movement, back to the late 60's can be found in very good condition for just over 2k.

Also, as far as I'm aware, apart from the switch to luminova in the mid 90's, both of these are essentially the same watch with a different ref no.

They look pretty much the same and as long as it's been looked after the 1981 will work as well. I don't believe that an '80s watch will be as expensive and as it has sentimental value for you that's the one I'd recommend. Also it's already over 30years old and when you're retiring will be something you can either pass on or sell without losing any money.

Thanks everyone. I think you're all right, I should go for the older watch. I suppose I just figured that a more recent model would be the easier option, i.e., I'd be more likely to find a model that's in great condition now. Need a bit more patience I guess!
