    Hi guys

Been given a chance to buy the below at an attractive 2nd hand price.. But of course the first thing to do is to go to my mates on omega. Any thoughts on this?

    Already?!

I didn't think these had even been released yet?

I'd be immediately suspicious about this until I could be convinced it wasn't fake or stolen.

Two things strike me as somewhat curious:

    1) the serial number seems kind of low for a very recent release. I have a Planet Ocean made in 2013 or so, and its serial number is in the 86 millions.

    2) I have a modern Omega watch with a crocodile strap, but nowhere does it say on the strap "crocodile"; the strap here says "genuine crocodile" yet does not even look like crocodile.

I'm far from being an expert on spotting fakes and my observations may be inconsequential, but I find these things curious nevertheless.

    Another observation:

The shape and proportions of the Omega symbol on the crown seem quite different from what is depicted in Omega's own promotional material:

I would stay away from that watch. The serial number 85895831 is for a ref. 23290465103001, which is a Planet Ocean Chronograph, not a Speedmaster.

Also, even without the benefit of using the Omega Extranet, look at the jewels on the movement - there are no pivots from wheels sticking through the jewels. This appears to be just a plate that has been stuck on the back of a movement to make it look like a modern Omega. Have the seller send you a photo of the balance wheel area - I bet there will be a reason he can't do this...

    Cheers, Al

It looks like @Archer has put a stake in the heart of this fauxbeast, and here are a couple of other observations which are instructive for a newbie faux-spotter (like me):

    * the finish/colour of the hands of the watch in question is very different from Omega's offering

    * the genuine article has has a retro-patina colour date wheel number which is consistent with the use of retro-patina colour on the rest of the watch, whereas the date wheel number on the watch in question is bright white.

Thanks guys. This should be a lesson to all the newbies man. Always come to the forums before dealing and getting hooked. Appreciate the help for identifying this as fake.

Stay away for sure! This is what the real deal looks like. The date wheel is in fact the wrong color, serial number as mentioned, and other things, but anyone of them means run, don't walk away.

Look at the "9300" - obviously a crappy cover over some other movement. Just compare with any picture of a real 57 caseback.

The movement is definitely not right. Here is how a 9300 movement is suppose to look like at the same position.

The anti-counterfeit laser etching is too small as well. There are way too many things wrong with this watch.

That's probably one of the best features of Cal 8500/9300 now with their nearly full displayback lineup, its a hell of a pain in the ass to make any cheap movement look anything like a twin barrel co-axial with silicon balance. Its the best anti-counterfeiting feature they've ever had.

Yeah the finish on the fake is just crap. Look at the unfinished areas towards the outer edge of the movement. Just horrible

Also the strap looks cheap and they don't stamp the leather underside like that. The Font is also slightly off on the subdial look at the 4 in the real one vs this one.

It says "Genuine Crocodile" on a strap completely devoid of any texture, reptilian or otherwise ::facepalm2::
