Hello all, I've come to own my first speedmaster and first modern watch, a 3590.50 from 1993. Comparing it side by side with other speedmasters, I have realized that the case of mine looked slightly different. I've searched around and come to the conclusion that speedmasters from about 1991 to 1995 have mostly flat sides with the lug chamfer being limited to the very top of case between the pushers and the crown - as opposed to others on which the chamfer comes down to about half of the case. 1993 seems to be the year that is most heavily pronounced. Here it is illustrated in pictures of 1993 speedmasters: credit: https://shop.analogshift.com/products/omega-speedmaster-professional-145-022 credit: https://omegaforums.net/threads/ome...st-145-0022-vintage-complete-set-3-650.60582/ credit: https://www.lunaroyster.com/archive-speedmaster/1993-omega-speedmaster-moonwatch-359050-tritium-dial credit: https://www.europeanwatch.com/25219.html credit: https://www.hqmilton.com/timepieces/romlmm3k/1993-omega-speedmaster-3590.50-8146 credit: https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=547524 By comparison here's one from 1997. You can see the chamfer comes down to half of the case between the pushers and the crown. credit: https://www.lunaroyster.com/archive-speedmaster/1997-omega-speedmaster-moonwatch-359050-tritium-dial It seems that some vintage models look similar, in particular some of the CB cases from 1966/1967, but I have yet to find a pattern that explains why some cases were cut differently. I've never seen that detail discussed, but I'm not very knowledgeable on speedys so I'm looking forward to hear what you guys have to say. Cheers, J
I'm not an expert on Speedmasters so won't be able to answer the question in detail but you are certainly right about the early 90's cases being different to modern. I've attached a side by side photo of my 1992 Speedy and my Speedy Tuesday and it is exactly as you say, with the chamfers on modern Speedy's coming around half way down the case but on the early 90's cases being far less so. Will be interesting to see what others say and those are great photo's of a lovely watch
Interesting. I had always thought the higher chamfer was due to resurfacing the case side. I learn something every day around these parts.
