This might sound silly, but my grail watch is a speedmaster. And I'm not really even referring to an older or rare speedmaster - just a basic speedmaster professional (not necessarily even one that would qualify as "vintage" per se). My feeling is I still get the great heritage, but in a watch I'm not afraid to use as a true tool watch or an everyday watch. The reason for my post is that, from a cost perspective I'd still like to get a used model rather than a new one. My question is - what is a good price for such a speedmaster? I'd like to get a good reference point so I know how much I need to save. Any thoughts (or things to look for) are appreciated.

$2500 should get you a decent modern (within past 10-15 years) speedy. Look for a 3570.50 reference.

Thanks. Other comments are welcome (appreciate the ref number). Also, any suggestions on best places to hunt are great too.

Contact Kringkily. Tell him your budget and he'll source an excellent piece for you. I've bought a 3750 and a 2254 from him. He's the best

Great recommendations, both on the forum and an individual member. That would give me more metal assurance than Ebay. Not that I thought it would be cheap, but I think I will need to do more saving that I thought. :)

2-3k ... feebay. Here. Google search "used omega speedmaster" and I am sure you will find many examples. Report back with your top 3-5 that you would consider and we can weigh in.

    Aim for a pre 1996 (triton dial-hands)

Or if you have more money available: aim for a pre and 1974 (stepped dial)

Thanks Clibka. I appreciate how willing this forum is to offer help! Al128, any reason for the time frames quoted? I'm afraid if I get too old a model I'll treat it as a vintage piece rather than simply a used piece that I'm not afraid to use

Anything post 1969ish I would consider wearable (although still vintage) your best bet has been said already though reference 3570.50. Just google that and find some examples.

Just a lot of us prefer the look of the stepped dial to the current one. Also if you're into speedies for the heritage, the stepped dial is closer to the ones that actually went to the moon.

And pre 1996 the dial and hands will have tritium lume (looks like al128 was having an autocorrect issue) which ages over time to a nice golden color, vs more recent watches which have super luminova (doesn't age).

A nice modern piece would fit your budget.. As traf said, 10-15 years old. Factor in the cost of a service in case you need it, maybe $500-$1000 USD for that.

...theres already enough people hunting for the stepped dial ones, it's a bit of a battlefield out there... :)

Good recommendations. I actually live in a town with lots of new luxury watch dealers (not much of a vintage market), so I'm curious if service cost would be more or less than average cost

The stepped dials are beautiful. But in my case, I think I'd have to go for a later model and forgoe it

I would definitely buy one from the trusted seller here on the forum. You might ended up finding the better price on the eBay, but a lot of crap out there, so I would be really careful.
P.S. I bought one from Jerome @WatchVaultNYC, used but in the brand new conditions and very happy with it.
    P.P.S Great choice BTW.

2 years ago, I got a 3573.50 sapphire sandwich for 2100usd, pretty much roughly used, but after cleaned up it looks just fine for a daily beater. You can find a modern one for more.than 2k now if you find hard

First off, the two that I wear daily are my 105.012-66 CBs. Vintage pieces aren't fragile, rather they are robust. The cases have reasonable wabi sabi, so I can't hurt them. The movements are bulletproof. The only reason I don't wear some of my other 321s is because they have pristine cases and I don't want to put a scratch on them. That said, you should study the market. FS sections of the various watch forums, watch auctions such as Antiquorum, Christi's etc. You can also look up past sales from the auction houses and ebay. Once you are familiar with the market, the watches and the prices, you will spot some that are absolute steals if you are patient. The problem with those is that you can't present them on a forum.

I'm a little late to this thread, but what is your budget ? You can pick up an automatic Speedmaster master for as little as $1500 up to $$$$$$$$$$$ .
