The 145.012 in lots 160 and 163 perhaps? I like the spear hand of 160 but not so much for the polishing job, but I am a vintage newbie ... Thank you for the tip, and your fantastic speedmaster101 site
I think it was lot 27, which sounded cheap with the bidding stopped at $24,000. I mean it had a BASE1000 bezel, and these have been changing hands for 10k. With Premium it was $30,000 all in. Now it all depends on the dial, if it actually looked nice, and payers of big money for tropical/browns have to see them. Perhaps this one did not look nice in hand, or only one Tropical hunter found it! Auctions need two.... http://speedmaster101.com/blog/christies-speedmasters-ny-december-2016/
Definitely looks a like a bargain, apart from your lovely grey dial none of the Speedies seemed to fly.
When I checked the results last night, I was surprised at what that went for. Given some previous auction fever results, I thiuht this would get towards 40k+ reasonably easily.
dial looks nice but should give an impression of "tired dial" once in hands...i think this the point why did not fetch as expected ...Tropical comman a premium when perfect..
Possibly the Speedmaster market is slowing down a bit? Collector grade pieces will always command a premium in the market. But in a softer market the "good" and "running" grade pieces don't sell as quickly or easily.
That's not always true. In a slow economy, sometimes the middle priced watches sell faster because nobody has the cash to pay for the higher value ones.
