speedmaster aventurine question

I was interested in getting the older steel aventurine speedmaster but an omega boutique manager commented that back when they sold them the dials would crack all the time. Can anyone else confirm?

Stone dials are indeed more fragile than brass or titanium dials, that are comonly used. This issue is not restricted to aventurine and/or Omega, it applies in general.

Thx. I'm sure that not all stone dials are created equal (thinness, cut outs, manufacturing materials processes, the watch's shock absorbing capabilities, etc). As such i am wondering if anyone else has heard if this particular watch was unusually prone to fracture even compared to standard stone dials.

That will be very hard to assess. As any natural product, this material can have defects in the form of voids, which are not visible, but can initiate breakage if loaded, usually during service. Stone dials are few and rare, so a watchmaker will surely remember if it cracked. But whether the aventurine cracks more often than malachite, which was also used by Omega? IMO no one will know, as you can just have 'bad luck' with yours. But there is surely a reason why the watch producers do not offer stone dials that often.

I know my comment sounds quite negative... In reality, I really like stone dials, but would not buy them due to the risk during service.

First off, these are not made of natural stone - this is form of glass that was first made in Italy. Aventurine in mineral form is a different thing, and doesn't look like the dials on these Speedmasters.

But to the main point of your question - yes absolutely. In fact Omega now requires all these watches to go back to Bienne because the dials are so easily damaged in hand removal, and they were going through too many dials at service centers. So that give you an idea just how fragile these are...Omega doesn't trust their own watchmakers not to crack the dials during routine service.

ah too bad- I like this watch and I haven't had issue with the blue side aventurine but if this older one is that delicate it seems like it's not worth the risk

The dial is like it is, if your dial is cracked the replacement cost is about 5000 chf, i have mine since 10 years and not a problem about the dial.

Well, for the 31130443201001 that I believe is being discussed, a new dial (that only Omega will install) is around $1,200 US, so not quite sure where the 5,000 CHF comes from...

This value comes from Omega in order to get the watch insured , now in Switzerland insurance are asking for « specific » watches values on the parts, one exemple was the mechanism of the moon rotation i got mine so fast that « don’t remember the name » and only these part cost also 1000chf , it appened that thoses movement models are called internally the Service killer they are not making any money servicing it actually.

If they told you 5,000 CHF for the dial, they have greatly exaggerated the value...as I said it's around $1,200 US - looking at it right now on the Omega Extranet.

super handsome!

it's not only the cost that's the issue - service would probably take like 6-9 months I would guess. Would suck to be without the watch for almost a year.

I mean if they have to replace dial. I bet it would be a long wait in that case.
