Speedmaster Arguments

I'm not a fan of the Sapphire crystal on the Speedmaster. As mentioned, that milky ring, in addition it seemed to not allow me to clearly see the watch face, at least compared to the hesalite. I ended up selling my souz because of this. Had that watch been released with hesalite, I think it would have been the best ever limited edition Speedmaster. While I do have a couple of Speedmaster with Sapphire, I ten x prefer the hesalite.

From a mechanical standpoint I am not convinced that in the 1960s NASA would have done this because there is a real risk of striking your watch against something and there is a real risk of sapphire fracturing and throwing shards about the cabin in microgravity.

However, I do understand that watches with sapphire crystals have since gone into space.

I’ve wondered why and when NASA began allowing sapphire crystals on astronauts’ watches, since these risks are still present today.

Obligatory photo of astronaut/Navy SEAL/Dr. Jonny Kim rocking his Rolex Daytona with sapphire crystal:

I went with hesalite because I think it looks much, much better than sapphire. I also went for a 3572.50 because I wanted the display caseback but I didn’t want a third-party spiralwinder one. That said, whilst I like the look of the og 1499/842 bracelet I have been very happy to swap that out for a forstner contemporary flatlink bracelet to give my watch a more vintage look.

Historical accuracy is interesting but it did not affect my decision on what model to buy.

Me too, I'll admit I became a Speedy owner before I knew anything about it going to the moon, so for me it was just the design and brand of watch that drew me in. Omega is 10X the watch Rolex is.
Nothing matches the Hesalite's warmth and versatility imo.

Been here since before Speedmasters were cool….and you could buy 321s for $1000 all day long on eBay.

Got the inkling to buy one and went down the rabbit hole.

Decided in 2014 to buy a 1861 with hesalite modern (just before the big useless box)
Make my own watch vintage by wearing it like all before. ( Live tropical and didn’t want to baby a 321. )

Have a Speedy Tuesday 1 and 2 also.

Hesalite is the best…. Anything after the 1861 is just out of my scope.

But all speedies are cool. Buy what you want.

Yeah it does seem the debate has been had before... and all Speedies are great. You just cannot go wrong. You can only decide how many you want (for now), what type (for now), and then go ahead and buy one! I don't have one yet, and unless someone gives me one, I'll be on the lookout. I only halfway care about historical accuracy.

Main thing for me will be covering several eras. A pre moon watch, something from the moon era, and maybe a first or second gen FOIS? Will cover my bases. After 3 of the same type of watch, I'd have to admit I'm a watch collecting degenerate, can't have that.

Can't understand why anyone would choose a modern hesalite 3861 over sapphire because of historical accuracy. Because of how it looks, however, I get it. They do look different and you might prefer one over another.
