Speedmaster A1 crystal versus newer versions

Hi everyone,

first of all I would like to thank all the members for putting together all the information on this forum - I already learned a lot of interesting and useful facts.

I have a question about Speedmaster crystals, specifically how the old ones (A1) compare to newer versions. I’m asking since I own a 105.003-64 with an A1 crystal and see quite some differences to my Transitional with a newer crystal. I couldn’t find anything on this forum, however if I missed something a link to any information will be helpful.

As you can see in the photo above the new crystal (on the right) creates an optical distortion whereas the A1 appears ‘flatter’ without a ‘loupe-effect’. This is especially evident when looking at the step of the dial which is much more pronounced for the new crystal; also the markers appear longer/larger. When looking from the side the A1 is only about 2/3 of the height of the newer crystal.

I was hoping that other forum members might be able to shed light on this issue and/or confirm my observations. As far as I know A1 crystals are not often found in Speedmasters today, however I was hoping that someone can provide photos for comparison. An initial thought of mine was that the A1 crystal might simply be polished down so all the ‘loupe effect’ is gone… Any input is highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Paul
