An 2998-62 is being offered for sale. At first glance the hands and dial looks original. Lume is faded and has turned yellow. However, the endlinks are stamped 516 which is wrong for this reference . DON bezel seems right. Serial starts with 195...... What are your thoughts on this speedmaster 2998-62? Thanx
well, to begin with, it's a 2998. have you bought it yet? everything appears to check out. I'd look for better movement pictures, and especially make sure that the column/pillar is ok. it's not missing a tooth, is it? it's a bit tired, but I bet the pics are doing it no justice. hard to say much about the case as it's obscured in these pics. maybe get some wider shots. is it in line with expected price ranges for maybe Running+?
Ignoring the last picture, which I know is chocolate.......is the OP 2998 slightly chocolate or are my eyes going
I'd be wary of calling it chocolate personally. for example, this watch is definitely not chocolate..
For sure, I agree with you. It's hard to tell in most pictures, and we all know they can be "adjusted".......
Thanx for the replies. I guess the dial is not chocolate. Btw the watch is missing a pusher and not currently running. However i will gamble and try to get a deal. Are original vintage pushers still hard to find?? Thanx
Anything original is going to be very difficult and expensive to find to complete this watch. The price is low for this market, but the watch has a lot of issues. It depends how much of a project you are looking to undertake and how much time and money you have to devote to finding the correct parts? It will take a lot of both to make this watch fully authentic, but it might turn out amazing too.
These Speedmasters can look really awful and come up beautifully after a sympathetic service. While original pushers could be found, they might be poor and Omega supply service replacements are perfectly acceptable to me in this case. The hands dial and bezel look correct. It's almost impossible to see enough to be brave on these terrible photos. However I don't know a forumite who would not put down $5400 for this watch on these photos. Things that bother me are the poor bezel, the possible state of the movement, the actual appearance of the dial. The next thing is that if I did not have access to my UK watchmaker who has parts, I would not be able to buy this and restore it successfully - This watch I am pretty sure will need several movement parts, that no one else has. Now others will protest, that they can do the work. They can. They just can't get the parts. What would this watch get on eBay, right now, with these photos? My guess is $8,000 to $10,0000. Though true, not from me!
I'd buy it for the asking price, never mind your offer price. Parts look ok and pretty much match imo. The dial does have a brownish tinge to my eyes. Bracelet alone is $800, even with filed down end pieces.
I don't see too many case parts on there that are incorrect, so it won't take much to bring it up to spec, visually. The pusher isn't a problem. It's a good idea to change them for correct replacements at a service anyway, after which, this could look wonderful. Although it's hard to ascertain condition from the pictures, I can see enough to satisfy me that I would buy it at that price At that price I'd have tried to bargain, but I would have taken it with me, even if it meant paying asking. The movement may be an issue but it will almost certainly be salvageable. How much of an issue depends how much parts it needs and where you are willing it send it for repair. That's the gamble here.
I would buy it without thinking twice. You'll never find another 2998 for $7K, let alone whatever price you can talk him down to. As others have said, the issues are not dealbreakers, as they're correctable and don't hurt the correctness of the piece. If it had, say, the wrong hands, bezel, or questions about the serial on the movement, I'd say walk away. Since it has none of those issues, however, I'd walk towards it as fast as possible! If you pass on it, DIBS!
Ok guys, what happened with this watch. I was offered the same watch for sale, well at least the same watch using the same exact pictures. I noticed it's also for sale at a couple other sites as well all for different prices: $3,000 on watchrecon, $30,000 on some other site and the $4,500-$7,000 discussed here. I used google reverse image search to find these sights fearing that $3,000 for a 2998 with a dial this perfect must be a scam. I'm starting to think I'm sadly correct. Any update on this? @earth38 Maybe there are just 3 2998-62's that have all aged in exactly the same way? http://forums.watchnet.com/index.php?t=tree&goto=782707&rid=0 http://articulo.mercadolibre.com.co...speedmaster-vintage-cal-321-serie-2998-62-_JM
