Most of my collection focuses around funky 70s omegas. When I started collecting, the speedmaster was the last watch I was interested in. I even started a thread asking why people liked them so much; I just liked so many other models more. I have liked quiet a lot of the LEs, especially ones like the tin tin, ones with a bit of colour but not enough to buy one. Since there are so many threads about speedies I have more often than not read them. Anyway, over time they have grown on me until I reached the point that I wanted one. I started looking at late 60s and early 70s models but they were a bit more than I wanted to spend and I don't have enogh knowledge to buy a decent one. I thought about a brand new one but they don't get that nice creamy lume colour that adds character, so after some research I decided to go for an apollo xi 20th anniversary edition. I was not too bothered wether it was a numbered le or if it came with box and papers just as long as it looked good. I reached out on the WTB section and was lucky enough to be able to buy one from a member here, gemini4. We have had excellent communication through out and the watch will be with me soon. I am looking forward to trying out when I get home in July. I guess if you hang out here long enough the speedy bug will get you in the end. anyway here are some pictures sent by gemini4.
Wow! That is a beauty and with the full set too! I think that you've made a very wise choice. The only thing is now, that you've probably been bitten by the Speedmaster bug, what's next?
Great buy! I will probably buy one in the future. Now I need to stay calm for a year or two so my girlfriend doesn't kick me out of the apartment.
Best looking one I've seen (and I have one!) ... not a suprise it came from the fine eye of @gemini4. Congratulations and enjoy!!
GREAT Choice for a first Speedy. This LE is probably one of my favorites, and you're lucky to have the full set! I have #0932 on the 1450 bracelet, and I never tire of wearing it.
Do the sub-dials of the 20th anniversary watch have the guilloche effect? @ATWG @DesignerV @lillatroll
I have not actually seen mine in the flesh yet so I can't help you with that question. I am flying home tomorrow and will be home Wednesday so I will have a look and let you know if nobody else answers first.
Like most Speedmaster dials, this reference has concentric circles at the sub registers. I haven't previously heard these circles referred to as "guilloche" but I suppose the term probably fits.
