Speedmaster 145.022 with swapped movement

Hi,

First, thank you for the wealth of information that can be found on the site. Much appreciated. I have purchased but can return at no cost to me a Speedmaster ~1973. It is my first/only watch. It has recently been serviced and I also took it to my local watchmaker to look at it, test it and let me take pictures if the movement etc.

To my untrained eye, everything looks original and for a 50+ year old watch it is in great shape and I really do like it. The movement however is from a speedmaster ~1983 I believe based on the serial number. From what I have read, this was probably done during a maintenance check and in the 80's or 90's might have been viewed as a positive by the owner back then. Neither I or the seller were aware of this and I'm able to return it at no cost... I paid $4,200.

My question - I like the watch (hands match the markers, step dial, bezel is clean, straight writing) and I am just looking for guidance. Part of me says, it's a great watch and I like and wear it and should not worry about it... I am not planning on selling and my son can deal with the diminished value 😀 Another part of me believes it might bug me and at $4,200 I should have a watch I am 100% excited about and not make concessions.

I've posted pictures from my phone but not the best at it. Again, any guidance or advice is much appreciated. I need to make a decision in the next day or so.

Looks like replaced hands as well.
No brainer
Return it. For that money you can get a nice original example.

I agree. Even if it had the correct movement, it’s not a very attractive watch. You can do better.

Also seems to be missing lume on the dial. I don't see the appeal, personally, as a vintage watch. And the price clearly doesn't reflect the condition issues.

look in OF Private watch sales thread. Speedmasters from OF members appear quite commonly. Often at good prices. Good luck

This is great advice.

Also, you might want to read through some threads here and get an idea of what to look for. IMO if you’re shopping for a first-and-only Speedmaster you can find good value in a 3590.50 from the mid-90’s. Look for a dial that has intact lume plots (not missing lume like your watch above); on a nice vintage dial the tritium lume will age to a creamy off white or light tan color. They’re great watches and you ought to be able to find one in your price range.

Agree. Movement aside, the lack of lume on the dial and replaced hands are a deal breaker. For low $4,000s you can get a near mint 3590.50.

A good step dial 145.022 from the early 70s will probably push you north of $5,000 USD. If you can find one for less, please sell it to me!

I’ve seen the occasional 145.022-69 sell for less than that, but I agree … it’s the exception rather than the rule. I found a decent straight-writing example last year for under $4k including a basket-case 1039 bracelet and a pretty good 1998/849 replacement. I was happy with that deal … would post pics but I just sent it out for service.

Thanks everyone for the guidance... appreciate it. Watch is with FedEx now and I am back in the hunt. I still really like the look of the vintage step dial but will also look at the 3590.50 (I actually almost purchased one off the reddit exchange last month). I am also looking at newer watches as there are some good deals to be had.

this one was posted in the ebay thread
IIRC this is the seller I bought the straight-writing 145.022-69 from. They’re a nationwide outfit that buys from jewelers, estates, etc. I thought my watch was accurately described. IMO this seller isn’t an expert in vintage watches, so you need to look at their stuff carefully. They have the usual slightly overexposed pictures, but they’re not as bad as some. And, like a lot of eBay listings, you don’t get a look at the movement.

With all that in mind, this watch doesn’t look bad to me. There’s a bit of lume loss on some of the plots, but the color is good (not green or moldy). The crystal looks original and could maybe use a polish. The case lines don’t look bad. Looks like there might’ve been some paint work on the sweep hand. Just my mostly-uneducated opinion, but I think this watch is a lot better than that last one.

And just as a counterpoint to the above, here’s a moldy dial from another -71 on eBay … definitely one to stay away from (not to mention that bezel):

Hi volume seller that occasionally has nice watches in barn find condition but you have to know your onions to separate the diamond in the rough from the garbage.

I am probably going to wait and try to find one on here or reddit - the buy the buyer makes even more sense when I just want a single go to watch.
