Not often you see one of these come up for sale with the box and papers, and in what appears to be good condition. Any issues? Is it as good as it appears? Service hands? Cropped end links? It will be interesting to see where this lands, especially after recent auctions. Weak £ will be a bonus for overseas bidders. What figure do you think sell for?
To me the hands are too short (and should have triangle lume inserts, but maybe rectangular ones are correct...can’t say I have seen them on 105.002’s)
Perhaps its a case of an unscrupulous person shoving a dodgy watch into a small auction, hoping to catch a pair of gamblers. This watch has a few flags
Normally I'd be peeved that the watch was discussed here prior to going under the hammer, but in this case it's probably a good thing. I asked for clearer pictures of the paperwork (copied here for anyone interested). The hands are a sign to me that it's been potentially messed with. The paperwork: I’m not convinced that the dial has been relumed (to address what was mentioned above).
I see the following flags: - The Hour and minute hands. Too short and looks like radium, should be tritium. - The box is of a later model than expected. - The papers, the word “replace” that is written on top?! But other than that I think the watch itself looks quite attractive.
Two different No. 6 endlinks. I'm not any sort of an expert on them, but those "6" couldn't be more different looking.
Yeah, the papers and the box are unconvincing. You’re buying the watch. Of course, if you don’t believe the papers, then you have to conclude that somebody, somewhere along the line, engaged in that manipulation. What else did this person do while the watch was in his hands, as long as he was at it? Interesting how suspect papers can actually diminish the value of a piece. (I wish I hadn’t seen so many blank sets of Omega papers on eBay in the last couple of years.)
I suspect the Papers, are legitimate There was a Jewellers of that name, in Oxford at that time…and indeed still there I do not believe that either the outer, or inner box, belong to that watch The watch itself,… is a mess of inconsistencies Is it bait ?…I have no idea…but this old Pike is pursuing a Speedmaster in Tehran,(?), at the moment
