    Hi,
I recently bought this Speedmaster 105.002-62, the watch Seems to be untouched and completly original (except the crown).
    SN: 195xxxxx

I would like to know what the experts think about this rare reference.

Specially about the Base 1000 bezel. I thought we saw them only on the 2915 and the first series of 2998.

    Thanks
    Flavien

The black base1000 bezel is not historical correct for the 105.002. It was made till 1960/61 and only featured for the 2998's. (2998-1 and 2)
If you paid a reseanable price for this peace it's not a bad thing a a base1000 bezel follows;)

I'm unsure about the baton hands. MWO mentions that only late copies for this reference should feature them...I think it's possible that yours was fitted with alpha hands based on the early serial for this reference.

Nice looking watch. The bezel is not correct for the reference, but Base 1000 bezels are very valuable. I'd love to know how it came to be on your watch.

If you want to make your watch correct, sell or trade the bezel and get a DON for it. You will come out ahead.

Wow, I'd be curious to hear how you picked this up. As you were already aware, the Base 1000 isn't correct for a 105.002, but it costs about as much as an Ed White on its own, so I'm guessing you made out like a bandit on this one. Amazing find.

Now that’s what I call a fortuitous service replacement bezel! Congrats!

    Thanks everyone for your messages.
This is a great replacement bezel indeed :)

For now, I don't know what I'm going to do with this bezel, maybe keep itand waiting to find a 2915 :D

    Something else,
I don't see bevels on lugs.
Is it normal for the 105.002 case? Or simply erased by wear (or polished).

    Thx
    Flavien

That watch has a story to tell. And looks wonderful.
Whilst the bezel is incorrect, if it were mine, I would happily just keep it as it is.
The bezel itself, as pointed out above, is a superior upgrade on the DON it should have come with. (yes not correct but)
    However, it troubles me not.
    Looks lovely to me.
    Congrats on the find

Sometimes incorrect is better than correct.
I would keep that bezel on it and just enjoy the hell out of it.

I would change the crown and hands. But that’s about it...

Well, there's a quote to be pocketed for future use.

There seems to be a consensus that this watch should have alpha hands. When I look at Speedmaster101 it says the following :

« Then part way through the production run the hand specifications changed from alpha to baton. I am unclear when this happened or if there is a pattern to which hands were fitted when. I also do not think the serial can dictate which hand set is/was/should be fitted. I now believe that either handset on any serial is possible. »

« When a privately owned 105.002 appears on the open market it is fiercely contested. »

So why are you all so sure it should have alpha hands or are you saying if it was mine I would change the hands ?

Please am I missing something ?

Personally, i always found it logical that the baton hands were in the second batch that have movement numbers in the 20,525,xxx range, which overlaps with the 105.003. of course, I have no proof, just a personal theory.

I do think that many prefer the alpha hands because one of the things that's interesting about this reference is that it's basically a 2998 on the new numbering system, and right on the cusp of the classic looking speedmaster professional.

All said though, either are ok. Looks great to me as is.
