The X-33 Skywalker is one of my favorite references. The functionality is unparalleled and while I know many don't think it's a looker I like it especially when I put mine on a silver snoopy strap. I know there have been the Solar Impulse and the ETNZ editions but really those are just "reskins" of the same watch. What are the odds we're going to see a 4th generation or 3rd (depending on how you are counting) sometime in the next couple of years. It seems hard to imagine it's been a big hit for Omega which is what scares me.
I'd love a new version. I do believe 2019 is the 15th or 20th anniversary of its release... But I could be mistaken.
Can we see a photo of your X33 on snoopy strap? I'm really considering it (esp cause I see it on sale for 30% off... at my AD)
Absolutely, I'm traveling and it's locked away elsewhere. I will post a photo but it might not be until early Feb.
Since it's more technology than pure aesthetic, I think you might have to wait a while longer.. Though I would expect Omega to keep a high end quartz tool watch in the stable.... But I think there needs to be a new innovation to bring a new version out. Maybe "smart watch" functions?
I'd settle for one with a HAQ movement coupled with a radio controlled function. But I imagine that we are more likely to get a foray into a GPS watch maybe. Hard to say, because it's not like GPS is useful in space.
I think that the same form factor but with solar power and time synch would bring it up to date. But then again, for most practical uses, a Casio GW-M5610-1ER can do all that for around $100
Oh! Definitely solar. Kind of drives me nuts that they released a watch called "Solar impulse" and the DAMN THING ISN'T SOLAR POWERED.
It would be prudent to actually try an understand why is was called solar impulse rather than just assume and make statements out of ignorance. Literally at the very top of the Omega webpage for this watch you will find: "The Speedmaster Skywalker X-33 Solar Impulse Limited Edition celebrates OMEGA's unique partnership with Solar Impulse project, whose team succeeded in their ambitious aim to circle the globe in an airplane powered only by the sun." So there's that.
where else do you have a mission timer with alarm to let you know when to check your bottles? paedipod brewing batch 001
I'm sorry? No. My statement was not "made out of ignorance". I know what it was in conjunction with. And it is still stupid. Solar powered watches have been around for over 30 years. Would it not have made MORE sense to release a solar powered watch in conjunction with the solar powered plane?
Omega doesn't make solar powered watches and admittedly would have been better as a Casio or something. That said Breitling doesn't have an internal combustion engine in their Bentley watches and Ferrari branded Pams don't either. Real silly on their part.
Right. Omega getting into quartz had nothing to do with the fact that Japanese quartz watches were killing mechanical watch sales in the late 60's and into the 70's. Omega went along with the trend and they admit it almost killed the Omega brand - regarded to this day as a mistake. They could have become another Bulova had they not turned things around with all the 007 tie-ins and later co-axial movements. I'm sure we'll see solar powered Omega's soon as mechanical watches are doing so poorly these days. I'm going to start holding my breath now.
