Space Chics 1978 - a Sci-fi tribute to stop watches in space?

I have seen some great threads on spaces watches, timers and hand held stop watches in Space and mission control. But when were they first featured in Sci-fi films...…...

It would be easy to dismiss Space Chics as a seventies bubble gum sexploitation star wars rip off. But the mechanical stopwatch on the main control console shows an attention to detail and I am not sure how they managed to hold up such strong production values + re-create the star wars bar scene so well on a limited budget....

Happy Saturday everyone.

When I saw the "Destination Moon" movie, as a kid I already realized this 1950 movie was the basis for Belgian cartoonist Hergé (Georges Remi) stories about Tintin & Snowy's adventures to land on the Moon... the miracle of all times, but no Speedmasters yet !
.

As a teenager I enjoyed Space 1999, the SF-series in which the sleeves were too long to spot any watches 😉

I was a big Space 1999 fan and too young to spot any 'relative' plot holes in terms of speed and distance. I think I still have an Eagle in the loft. I did love UFO (also Gerry Anderson) in the sixties and early seventies they kept everything short enough that you were Certina to see the watches...….Also Ed Bishop was probably stronger than Martin Landau... as a leading man....but neither Gerry (or Mrs Gerry) would argue with Barbara Bain (who is still going!!)… I know I also have a UFO interceptor in the loft.

Space 1999 brings back some memories. Loved that show...I used to think that I would probably never have a hand held device to communicate with others the way they did on that show...

I know what you mean, but I have to say compared to watches I was a bit disappointed with the communicator development and Tasers are ways off the beam.... :0)

Well the "commlock" devices used on Space 1999 certainly were better than the Star Trek versions, as they have a small TV screen included for video - closest to the current phones I guess.

But yes, nothing quite like a phaser of the stun gun used on these programs...at least that we know of and can get.

Yes a lot of the kit in Space 1999 did look functional. You can buy 3D printed Commlocks / people have re-produced them. I saw this on ebay today - if it is from the original set the price looks good compared to other 'props' I have seen for sale at auctions.....

Blakes 7 was another good TV Sci-fi. The props / sets were not the best but the first ship was a cracking design and the overarching plot has a very adult theme / very dystopian - use of chemicals and mind controls to subdue populations / false imprisonment etc. Totally far-fetched :0)
Bracelet communicators and teleports featured.

Wow. Totally forgot about that one. Saw a few episodes on PBS when I was a lad.

They were all on YouTube.... episode 1.... main character framed as a child molester by the government and innocent unarmed civilians meeting to discuss the truth all murdered by the state … proper kids TV from the BBC in 1977 :0)

A bit of torture porn to round it out.
I've seen every episode. Great series with an unsatisfying ending. The main player wanted out and had demanded his character be killed off so the series had to end with a general slaughter.
Most don't recognize that there was in fact a duex ex machina that could have allowed the series to continue into at least one more season. Hint, Clones. That was already well set up by previous events. Remember that little laugh at the end?

Weapon had x3 Blakes I think and the IMIPAK was an interesting concept - Project Avalon was another one. I got a lot more from the series watching it as an adult (ish). RIP Avon (Paul Darrow) and Servalan (Jacqueline Pearce). A bit over the top acting at times but I still think they created amongst the most nuanced Sci-fi characters of all time - which should have made the big screen.
