Our son is 7. Until recently he didn’t care what was on my wrist or what Watch I was tinkering on but recently he started showing an interest. Fascinated by watching me assemble a movement or set hands I decided it was time to get him his own watch. The enthusiast in me wanted to start big - mechanical, stainless steel, etc, etc. But I got control of myself and realized this is HIS watch and should suit his tastes. So together we browsed IG, eBay, and Pinterest to get a sense of what he liked. It’s amazing how much his preferences varied from my own. He wanted rectangular, digital, gold or polish stainless, and a blue light.
After learning his tastes, the hunt was on. I ended up stumbling into this one in a pawn shop in Bozeman, MT. $10. Can’t go wrong with that.
Well here it is, a Casio Chrono! He’s so pleased to have his own watch. It’s great to see his enthusiasm.

Excellent first choice. I"m sure he'll love it. I assume he already knows how to read a dial.

I had one of those when I was his age! Nice retro styling for a kid- the 80's are hot right now (the whole Stranger Things nostolgia). I think your Speedy will be his sooner than you expect.

My four year old always asks if he can wear the 'square watch' and I think "oh no not the 70s zenith, it won't last five minutes!".
Thankfully he means the Casio... he loves it and I think its pretty cool too, reminds me of my childhood :)

You know, I'm actually carefully planning my Speedie Pro purchase as I think he'll love to have that passed on to him. He's all about space, NASA, etc. We watch First Man together (he loved it). It prompted him to say he wants to be one of the engineers who helps people get to Mars.

My 12 yr old daughter currently wears a digital Armitron that she bought with her own money. She had an analog watch a few years ago, but broke the crystal. I would like her to get used to analog and teal is her favorite color, so I just ordered this:

My 10 year old has never had a watch but likes black and pink, so I went with this:

For first watch is better that it has analog display.

Great shot and a solid choice! There's something special about a first watch... And something special about a classic Casio like this one. Just make sure he never trades it away at school! Kids do strange things

Nice! My son picked out his own watch too, when he was around 8 years old. It was a huge Timex digital and he loved it. A couple of years later we took it to Maui in Hawaii (about 10 yr ago) and did some Snuba diving (like scuba but tied to a tank floating 20 feet above us) and the bezel fell off in water too deep to find (like 30 feet).

We may still have the watch somewhere, but it took him a while to find one he appreciated as much (blue and black Casio Protrek). Now he has a Casio solar atomic radio Protrek, birth year Omega Bond quartz 2541.80, Omega X-33 Skywalker, a Luminox Colormark diver, and a Luminox field watch. His 1998 birth year 3572.50 is in the safe, waiting for college graduation.

This is the best pic I could find (pic of me and my son in Hawaii).

Took this pic of my wife and 3 kids on that dive - only he and I wore watches (His timex, and me with an old Seiko SKX009).

EDIT - found a better pic of his 1st watch

That is going to be such an awesome graduation day! Much kudos to you for planning for that momentous occasion with a truly precious gift. I'm confident he will appreciate the piece for what it is, but more so he will appreciate the person that have it to him. It becomes so much more than just a watch at that point.

Looks like a fun family vacation! Cheers!
