Best find was this lady in the WUS forum who paid $2 for an untouched speedmaster 2915. It fetched over $20k at auction a few years back.

She found it in a garage sale. Her mistake was she had it refurbished at Bienne where they relumed the dial among other things and polished the case. If not for this it would have fetched double.

Yeah...the best deal I've seen from a flea market/garage sale in NYC was a JLC alarm for $200. 馃

TZ - a $2 odd lot bag from an estate yard sale produced a vintage Patek Philippe 3417 for member wisconsinwalter IIRC.

Good job! The difficulty is the ability to recognize the value when one comes along. We hear about Rembrandt and Picasso treasures found in yard sales as well.

Spectacular. What flummoxes me is if you are an estate picker and you truly don't know anything about the item WHY would you sell it as a BIN? Why not let the market determine the price?

I scored a completely untouched Zenith A 386 like this at 2 AM one Tuesday morning in 2010 - paid a little over $1000 - not epochal, like the Patek, but about a fourth of its market value then. The dope seller then wrote me about a really cool quartz Bvlgari he was about to post in case I was interested.馃檮

Quick cash is my guess. It's good for us though! 馃憤

Hey, if a Bvlgari was good enough for Tony Stark it's good enough for any of us geeks!

No, no, it was this A 386:

look at the original finish and edges on the lugs:

A dedicated collector can hunt years before he finds an example like that and then pay through the nose, but Mr Genius Estate Picker has one fall into his hands and decides to dump it for one large, when Ebay offers him a near-ideal means of letting the market speak. Good for us, as Kyle says, but I'll tell you if I ever stumble across a stamp album or an old coin that I know doodly squat about, it'll be a seven day auction for sure.
