They are working the big fire up north 200,000 acres. This one is only 9,000 acres so far. Although we have some odd weather right now with unstable monsoon conditions with a nasty inversion. They just had to call off the air tankers as there is lighting in the pyrocumulus

Basically a perfect storm to create massive localized windstorms from downdrafts. Which means very very fast moving fire lines. Currently it’s moving east and north where there are no houses. West could be worse then Laguna Beach fires 25 years ago.

Been thinking of the people affected by fires in California, Spain, Portugal, Greece and elsewhere and hope everyone stays safe. We're no strangers to bushfires in Australia. It's the middle of winter here and yesterday the weather conditions were benign in Sydney with little wind. I took this photo of a controlled burn-off that our fire crews set in bushland on a headland in the middle of metropolitan Sydney. They do this to reduce the fuel load before summer arrives. Don't know whether this is done in other countries but it helps here with the large amount of fuel generated by debris coming off our native trees (eucalypts). Actually, I read the other day some people in Portugal are blaming eucalypts imported from Australia for their fires.

We do them also. We also have eucalyptus here. The problem is in SoCal it’s drier then the native habitat so they store sap. When they go up in flame they have a nasty habit of exploding.

This fire is all chaparral though and hasn’t burned in 40 plus years.

They've been having serious problems with the fuel reduction burns over winter in my area-southern highlands of NSW. About 2 months ago one got out of hand, took 4 days to put out , burned a few sheds but no houses. That's the drought, I suppose.

Yes iPhone. Pretty easy to do. I wish it allowed 360’s though. Then again there is an app for that I guess.

    Thanks!

Yeah, this isn't good. Taken from the 405 in Irvine (I wasn't driving), about 15 miles away.

OC’s pretty good... it’s going to burn into Riverside county. Not much in the area they project it to burn... unless your into Nudist Colonies but that’s for another discussion.

Where are you in the OC?
