I've been wondering about this for a while now. Why does anything with a Snoopy on the dial gain instant popularity, while a 007 logo on the dial is widely considered tacky? I know that market is what it is. It just doesn't make much sense...

It might have to do with why Snoopy is on the dial... plus an attractive colorway. The other is movie tie in that generally does it yield an attractive watch. Plus much lower numbers on the Snoopy.

It may also have to do with the demographics and the current age of those who grew up reading the Peanuts comics.

Don't forget that Snoopy has the Apollo Lunar connection that is endearing to the Speedy-Moon enthusiast.

I guess wearing a Bond watch also has a potential wannabe factor which people are likely to shy away from (don't shoot me, I have a 2531.80 and a Skyfall... probably wouldn't wear a watch that actually said 007, though). No such risk with the Snoopy.

A watch that’s supposedly worn by a “secret agent” with his code number all over the dial, or on the hand, or with the crest of his family on it, or in a package that denotes his navy rank, in an edition of 007,000,000,000,000... I can’t imagine why those don’t sell out.

Funny how the Seamaster 300 LE from Spectre, with no obvious Bond branding and the lollipop hand does so well....

Snoopy had 3 things going for it.

    1) White dial, several new cool features like case back, bezel and lume ( pretty much the watch )
    2) Snoopy tie in to space Apollo 13 ( 14 seconds )
    3) Peanuts collectors who like Snoopy

Bond has 1 thing going against it

    1) grown men wearing one with 007 on the dial would look like a

( this is my opinion and three females aged between 30-40 I asked half hour ago only )

Snoopy watches are always popular, pretty much no matter what brand releases them. I remember them being around on the school playground when I was a kid. Someone on here referred to the Omega Snoopy Apollo 13 LE as 'a perfect storm' a while ago, which pretty much hits the nail on the head.

I am waiting for the Sixtieth Anniversary Honeymooners Omega Speedmaster Special Ed Norton Edition.
As Ralph Kramden would often yell, "The moon, Norton, the moon!"

It’s too bad about the 007 part being tacky. Funny thing is that they make they special editions all the time and they sell out. Must Abe lots of tacky people out there.

I agree it’s probably the wannabe factor hence the 2531.80 and Spectre 300 being less so because of the lack of shouting it’s a Bond watch as they lack a logo.

The blue dial JB Aqua Terra with shield on the seconds dial is a nice in between.

Me? Don’t get the Snoopy thing but I’m also not a “Speedy” person. I appreciate Speedmasters (especially their history) but I am no means an enthusiastic.

Most Bond LE’s take a fairly long time to sell out, if they ever really do. The very popular 300mc with virtually no branding took awhile also.

I would say most Bond watches are one off bond enthusiasts that get replenished ever few bond films. And the collection is worldly as Bond is quite popular in south east Asia as well. (Remember how huge it was in Malaysia one trip there)

Only seen one person here over the last 7 years with several bond watches.

I might be remembering incorrectly, but I don’t think the first Snoopy speedmaster “eyes on the stars” was all that popular, I remember seeing them in AD’s for a long time, and it seems it wasn’t until the silver snoopy gained popularity that the first version became more collectible.

Personally, I think that the great design execution has a lot more to do with the popularity of the silver snoopy than the snoopy itself. First and foremost, it is a great looking and unique speedmaster also benefitting from the the “snoopy” theme.

I’ve always liked the Casino Royale PO. Had a chance to pick one up at an AD with a big discount but didn’t really have the funds at the time, it’s now worth three times as much. Big mistake.

I have always viewed it as the Snoopy has a comical aspect to it to reflect someones personality. While the 007 might be someone taking themself too seriously, it really comes down to the person wearing the watch. If you enjoy the 007, wear it, same for the snoopy.

Snoopy is a NASA initiative, based on strict eligibility criteria. Omega earned the award based on well documented historical events. Spectre/007 is a marketing/product placement arrangement.

Of all the SFA Awards, the Silver Snoopy best symbolizes the intent and spirit of Space Flight Awareness. An astronaut always presents the Silver Snoopy because it is the astronauts' own award for outstanding performance, contributing to flight safety and mission success. Fewer than 1 percent of the aerospace program workforce receive it annually, making it a special honor to receive this award.

Like any company, all Omega cares about is making money (i.e. selling more watches) and both 007 and Snoopy allow them to achieve that goal, at least with some customers...but not this one.

it's because, arguably, Snoopy has a reason to be because of it's affiliation with space flight. So you have two brand entities linked through a common human achievement. There is nostalgia, there is iconic and there is actual, real exploration and achievement related to both of them. It is real.

James Bond is a fictional superhero of sorts. His affiliation with Omega is purely commercial. In the books and early movies Bond is a Rolex guy...later in the movies he is an "everything cool guy" and in the 90's he is a "product placement guy". He is a billboard. If they make the Omega Planet Ocean "Aquaman" or Speedmaster "Flash" or the Deville "Iron man" it won't carry any less or more value than a James Bond Omega. Is it cool to see them in the movies...yeah! is it enough to justify buying a "Bond" branded watch? not to me.
