So on the back of my research I just had this article published on Fratello
All as a hobby/ not for profit.
It has been a real privilege to find out more about wing commander Roland Falk, the test pilot who flew the Vulcan on its maiden flight.

What's a "rarrel roll" 😉

I bet Roly was glad he was the first one in the cockpits in his suits and didn't have to do any test flights after grubby pilots had spent time in that claustrophobic compartment.

I was on duty crew many years ago and had to do a seat safe/after flight check on a Vulcan that had just done a leg from Diego Garcia to Williamtown via Darwin.

I nearly gagged as I climbed into the cockpit, the "fragrance" was extraordinary.

Magnificent aircraft though, and I managed to be on the strip as it left, fully loaded with fuel, four noisemakers at max and making height ever so slowly as it roared into the distance.

Same as if you have ever stood over a submarine for the hatch cracking. Nothing like the smell of human, machine and 3 meals a day cooked for a few weeks all in one aroma……😗

Worked with an ex-submariner when I was on the ANZAC project. We were both standing near a vent pipe on the outside deck and there was this awful stink.

I said "What's that f*#king smell?"
"Dunno mate, I can't smell anything off".

They must get used to it.

I did not get to check it before publication but there are a few minor edits due later today. Overall I am more than pleased.

From a very recent Battle of Britain manoeuvres experience I believe the correct spelling is indeed ….#! ¥%Aaagh
