Show us your Rolex Submariner

Hi fellow Submariner fans,

I've been struggling with an idea, and I figured you'd be the natural source of advice.

I've owned a 116610 since 2015. My wife bought it for me on the day we picked up our wedding bands, and I wore it on our wedding day and during our honeymoon in Jamaica (it was on my wrist when we went snorkeling). Over the ensuing years I've worn it a bit less frequently, and it's not in my regular rotation - I've been known to leave it in my watch box for a month or more at a time, while I wear my Seamasters and my Speedy a whole lot. It's not that I don't like the Rolex - in part I think it's due to the Instagram effect and the idea that I don't want to look like a jerk (or attract the wrong kind of attention in public).

But the biggest thing I've realized over the past couple of years is that I really prefer the 114060. The purity and symmetry of the no-date dial just looks a lot better to me. Which brings me to my point: I've been looking on Chrono24 and elsewhere for price ranges, and I've reached out to several grey market dealers who have the 114060 in stock. Invariably I've been offered a trade price for my current watch around $2K less than the no-date version. I think if I did the exchange, I'd wear my Rolex considerably more often than I do now. That said, I don't know if exchanging a Sub Date (technically about $1K more expensive than the Sub when new) for a no-date Sub, while paying a premium for it of about 20% on current value, is worth it. (I could easily put the $2K towards a Tudor Black Bay 58, for instance.)

I'd really welcome your thoughts and suggestions, friends. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: For those of you who may be wondering, I've talked about this with my wife, and she's OK with the idea in principle. She's actually asked me a few times whether I should sell my 116610 if I'm not going to wear it regularly, so she's not hung up on the idea that since it was a gift, I have to keep it regardless.

Thanks for your thoughts. I should have mentioned a couple of things: First, I certainly understand the profit motive. The dealers are definitely in business to make a profit, and I wasn't expecting an even exchange. (If I gave that impression, that's my fault.) But if I need to pay about a thousand dollars, I can do that without too much bother to my conscience. Two thousand or more, I start to wonder (not if it's worth it in the marketplace, but if it's worth it to me).

Second, if I'm going to do this, I'll need to sell the Sub Date (or exchange it) to close the deal. I can't afford to buy the Sub no-date on its own without selling something else. I only have one Rolex, and I'm not sure I'll be able to own two. We'll see.

A question for the uninitiated (such as myself) on one of these: the rehaut is engraved, something that I thought was new within the last 15 years or so; but the case also has lug holes, which I thought they'd done away with around the same time.

Engraved rehauts started in 2004-2005. The 14060M is the best 5-digit Sub IMO.

Picked up this old but unusual beater a couple weeks ago. At watchmaker for overhaul, should be ready this week.
