Is this called officially a 'Clous de Paris dial'?

😁😁

That's what I would call it. Or "hobnail." It's tiny pyramids in rows. Not sure it's technically guilloché, though.

could serve as an example for sometimes "more is less" ... damn - slapping a windshield wiper on a guilloche 😒

... or non-guilloche 😉

So my VC dial is only "textured"??? Not "guilloche"???
Perhaps I should delete it from this thread?
Very Sorry. Not very learned about the technical requirements of Guilloche.
That will change as I soon hope to visit the Breguet Museum in Paris and become expert.
Luckily, I can substitute a picture of my Breguet Heritage Big Date.
It's dial is made for the Guilloche knowledge deficient watch owner. Such as myself.

Affordable entry level: Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Small Seconds.

I saw a friend on the golf course today wearing a guilloche dialed Oris. Can't speak to the quality but it was rather nice looking.

Patek is known for their hobnail bezels. They are still produced on their original hand operated machine that's over a 100 years old.

Maurice Lacroix made a tourneau cased watch called Jours Retrogrades or something like that which looks a lot like that gorgeous Breguet.

The ML was supposed to retail for $8400 but it seems like most of 'em were dumped on the grey market in the $1500 to $2000 range.

I offered some retailer $1000 for a new one and was surprised when he took my $$ and ran lol

I guess it's not really worth much but it's a really nice watch with a legit in-house movement. I'm not sure how Maurice Lacroix stays in business selling $8000 watches for one or two thousand bucks but I guess they've got their margins figured out?

I've worn it 3 or 4 times and it's a sharp watch.

I'll have to see if I can find a macro picture of the dial because it's straight up gorgeous engine turned guilloche goodness...

In addition to the output from traditional lathe like guilloché machines, there were many more millions of dials produced by hydraulic forming or stamping, similar to coin production.

Once a high quality die stamp was engraved, many dial blanks could be produced to the original pattern at much lesser cost.

I think a number of dials we see are of this format, e.g. Omega "Clous de Paris" or hobnail/waffle dials. I have nothing to substantiate this but would be interested in any comments.

That process is what is meant by "Faux-Guilloché" in the thread title, yes?
