This one was fished from the ‘Bay for $9.99 and featured a broken crystal, tarnished hands, and worn-through lug holes. It cost twice what I paid to mail it to me, and twenty times that to service it. Obviously I have the cost-to-value part of this hobby completely backwards...
Couldn't decide which one is my favorite so here are my three favorite low-cost watches:
Smash Dragon Ball Z - Goku vs Cell - I don't really wear this one anymore but this one is timeless.
Casio F-91W- This watch is invincible. Wear it primarily for swimming and snorkeling. 6 years later, it's still going strong. Seiko 5 - Picked up for less than $100 over a decade ago. I still wear it as a daily.
I think that there is lots of love for Seikos. The impression may come from their price level, but that has little to do with appreciation. They are well regarded for what they are.
My Mondia Chris-Craft was purchased for $35 shipped on the 'bay. A.Schild movement with incredible 3D indices and a bright blue dial. It came with the original bracelet too, although it's rattly and cheap. This one is a rare bird.
Discovered the auto mechanism was removed, bought parts watch on eBay for $60.
Had it serviced with said parts watch as donor, $150.
Horween strap was $65…maybe this doesn’t qualify anymore.
The one in the middle.
My 1974 Citizen prodiver 62-6198 which Had been used as a diver in the Caribean, Norwegian fjords and in the Baltic sea back in the 70’s and 80’s
This one may not qualify as a cheapie (I got it for free), and it is not a favourite. It was not running when I acquired it, but I fixed that with a $6.00 replacement movement and a cell. This is pretty much the only watch I have that I consider a beater. I bought 50 expansion bracelets like the one that is on it. New, stainless steel. I bought the box of 50 off a silent auction table at an NAWCC mart many years ago, for $20.00. Nothing in particular against Seiko watches. It’ just that I don’t collect them.
