As you mention in the post "about possible repairs" which obviously are unknown, I would not pull the trigger. Too big a risk.
If you want a beater then get another watch. I do not know what your budget is.
I personally have a Rolex precision that I use during travels to places I do not want to flash a two-tone or Sport model, to limit my loss if something were to happen. Sometimes, I wear the watch on the inside of my wrist.
These watches (Wyler) do not seem to command a big price. Sometimes is better to spend a little more money on a watch, regardless of brand, that has a service history from a known/respected seller that will offer a guarantee in case something does not work out.
For $20, you will get none of the above..
