I haven't bought a Speedmaster in a while so i am a bit rusty on current values. I am offered this for 6000 usd. Do you think it is worth it? I sure appreciate any input. Thanks
Will its wrist presence give you pleasure? I believe the answer to that question is the answer to your question...
Well the photos seem a little adjusted but I think it’s a nice color dial. Lume plots are not as pleasing as some. Check the serial for 2911 or 2960. Get a good picture of the dial in a variety of lights and no adjustments. I have to say I would want to look further as it might be a nice brown.
The bezel is modern as is the bracelet (or at least the end links). It's a reasonable assumption that this watch has been back to Omega HQ in the last ten or so years for a service.
Well if the bezel and bracelet are modern, I can't see paying 6k. Am I correct in assuming that a even with a brown dial it seems over priced? Or does a good brown dial worth that much? As I said, I am very rusty on Speedmaster values. Thanks for all of your insight. I appreciate the input.
I actually don’t think the $6k is too far off. If it’s a watch you would like to wear and enjoy then quite frankly, it’s “value” is a personal assessment. People seem to play their gut a lot more when it comes to brown dials. There is definitely a premium afforded to them, which is why checking serial numbers is important. I’ve see other people subtract $500 for the bezel. The 1171/633 bracelet is newer, but still compliments the vintage look IMO. You can always sell the bracelet and look for a flat link or put it on a nice strap (I like brown dials on complimenting straps).
I am unclear as to whether this watch would need a DON bezel. If it does, with a correct bracelet, you have an additional $3500 to $4000. Of course you can sell the parts to offset the cost. Even a correct DNN bezel will probably set you back $700?. What does Speedmaster101 tell you?.
69 was delivered with both, DON and DNN. Serial was from 28.420.xxx to 31.629.xxx . Switch from DON to DNN was in 1970, First DNN in 70 was the misprinted 220 bezel.
I think I need to be less English. When I say this: "I have to say I would want to look further as it might be a nice brown. It means that as soon as I verified the serial was 2911 or possibly 2960 I would buy the watch as soon as I could, and any negotiation would be bunce toward the "new" old bezel which true enough might be $2000-4000 if you did it properly and did not have one lying around. So worst case its $10,000 and best is perhaps $7500 - most likely somewhere in between. Show me another decent brown 2911 for that money! These browns are a dark art. Sometimes people have acquired them by accident, and sometimes if sought these are asking $20,000. Photos are extremely difficult to buy on, but from what I see this is a nice watch. If you do not want to buy it for $6000 I do. I do not think I am alone. So get on and buy it - you found a good one
