Serial numbers - what are they for?

I'm new to the hobby and trying to learn more. When looking at vintage Omegas, what exactly are serial numbers used for? Based on this article, I get that they are used for dating the watch. But apart from that, I would like to know if there are any additional factors to consider, such as using the serial number to determine the authenticity of a watch?

If a dealer/seller lists the watch as " production year 1961," but its serial number falls within the range of 19,000,000 to 19,999,999, which should correspond to 1962, does this discrepancy indicate that the watch is potentially fake, or could it simply be a mistake made by the seller?

Thanks!

It’s not as hard and fast as that. People see online serial charts and see a 19m serial corresponds to a certain year. In reality, it’s an approximation and the serial is a given year, plus or minus a couple of years.

At the end of the day, a serial number only really tells you the approximate date of the bridge it’s found on. You need to use knowledge, experience, visual clues, research to tell you whether the rest of the parts are genuine and correct.
