Hello everybody! New to here. Looking at buying an older omega. Wondering when omega started putting seamaster on the face dial? Thanks!

Welcome aboard. Given that there is a new book about to be released titled "From Seamaster to Seamaster: The First 70 Years", I'd say 1948.

I think this is a fair question that is not easy to find on google. I'm interested in an answer too.

Please note, for the record, that it wasn't me who posted the smart-ass answer.

The record shall reflect that the smart-ass-in-residence was away from his computer at the time that OP posted his question. :)

Omega states the Seamaster line-up started in 1948, but I don't recall seeing the word Seamaster on the dial for the first few years. I think (and I'll probably be corrected) it was the early 50's that Omega started putting Seamaster on dials, which is about the same time the crowns and crystals started getting the Ω logo - give or take a few years.

    So noted.

So you have identified the problem. What is your solution (for it not happening again)? :D

I'll have to be more diligent with my post monitoring.

I had a 1949 2577 with no SM text on the dial and still have a 1950 2577 with the text. I think in fact the text was there from the off in 1948 with the launch of the first models but not on all pieces and all markets. My 1949 piece was from Austria and I have seen others without the SM markings from that era.

    In short: 1948

So no Seamaster on the dial in the 1950 catalogue, eh?

    Pics, or it didn't happen!

And BTW,... how do you deduce 1948 when so far, no one here's seen one?

The tribute releases at Basel are a pretty solid indicator ;)

I deduce by researching! How exactly can you say no one has seen one?

This has been discussed several times before, here for one but i’ll see if I can find more links later. My unbranded 1949 watch appears here as well as a SM with very early serial (though I guess that coukd be a franken)

    https://omegaforums.net/threads/early-seamasters.56702/

My take is that there were SM branded watches from the off in 1948 but there were also chronometers without the SM branding using more rigourously tested movements and also unbranded pieces for certain markets all using the same new gasketed water resistant case designs.

The OP's question was when did Omega first put Seamaster on the dial.

Yes, it is quite apparent that the first SM was 1948...

During the launch for the tribute releases, Omega used pictures pictures of old Seamasters, presumably 1948 originals with the text. That is likely the point being made. You seem to be a bit spikey about this!
