Seamaster SMP help

Hi everyone--

Sorry if this belongs in modern watches, but I suppose 90s watches are considered vintage by many today. I'm trying to purchase a midsize Seamaster Professional quartz----similar to the one Prince William wears. Would anyone mind letting me know if this seems like a decent example? Too risky given that it's from a private seller? I am also curious to know if the tritium dials which were made from 93-97ish are more desirable. The pumpkin like patina on the earlier models is interesting, but I don't know if it will stand the test of time (i.e.--are patina'd watches just a fad...).

Here is a version of the slightly older dial with tritium lume. What's your preference?

It’s a matter of taste, but I personally think SuperLuminova looks better on the “Bond” iterations of the SMP. But if you prefer Tritium, you go for it!

I hear you on that. I keep going back and forth on it!

Also, does the lettering look wonky or are the photos just not ideal?

On the lume I would honestly just consider how important the function of it is to you - you'll get next to nothing out of tritium at this point whereas superluminova should still be working fine. Unless you particularly prefer the look of the tritium I would go superluminova.

Be aware that usually with these the colour fade on the tritium dial lume plots and hands is noticeably different, with the dial going pumpkin and the hands staying rather more green. This is pretty universal and to me the mismatch grates so I prefer the later SL lume (which as noted above will continue to do its job indefinitely). If you find an example with matching tritium lume then that would certainly be worthy of consideration but there really aren't many. Note the tritium one you show above has had the picture brightness pumped, I bet in hand there is a big difference between hands and dial colour.

The superluminova does look a bit more crisp as well.

While this is the full-size automatic version

I have always preferred SL over tritium for this reference. For reasons padders said above but also, because too me, each tritium indice looks like mini sunny side up eggs and I can’t unsee that, lol.

Anyone else have input on which one looks better aesthetically?

I prefer the pumpkin patina look. For no other reason than I like the look. Lack of active lume on a watch doesn’t even phase me as so many of my vintage pieces lost it years prior to them ending up with me. So just get whatever floats your boat. I don’t think the lettering on the watch is “funky” looks like a picture I’d take with my iPhone but you might want a more clear pic to assuage your concerns.
