Apologies if this has been covered. I've looked for reliability information regarding Omega Seamaster, particularly with the 2500D movement. I know it is better than the previous movements and has solved early teething problems.

However, I have a Seamaster SMPc (purchased new this year) and have seen posts in some Rolex forums that Omegas are not as reliable as "rock-solid" Rolexes. I know his may just be bluster, but it did get me to thinking about how long my watch could last. As of this moment I have no plans of getting rid of this watch and hope it can lasts for decades. I plan to have it serviced every 4 or 5 years as recomended. Does anyone have some insight or perspective they can provide?

For the record I'm thrilled with my watch and am looking forward to being on this forum.

    Thanks.

In short you got nothing to worry about. You'll always have fan boys of each brand claiming this and that....I own enough of both brands to know that the quality of Omega's movements is as good if not better. Their older movements relying on variations of ETA etc are proven/robust in the Swiss industry and the newer in house coaxial movements are noteworthy when it comes to horology.....Rolex is happy making small changes in movements they've had for the last many decades now because......well, no need to fix what's not broken and they just focus all of it on marketing instead.

I'd take the reliability of an Omega over any other timepiece. Take care of it and you'll have a companion for life. I intend to have this forever:

The early 2500 movements had some issues, that's true, but if you own the SMPc with the latest version of the 2500, you have nothing to worry about just enjoy your wonderful [emoji355] as I enjoy mine [IMG]

When NASA had to pick a watch for the astronauts tested many watches. Only 3 arrived to the final session of test and among them there was the Daytona and the speedmaster...
The speedmaster beated the Daytona in the last test.

A part from this historic fact, I own mainly omegas, my brother rolexes. We do not really see any difference... just enjoy what you got and service it regularly. :)

Don't worry about it. It's not unusual to hear Rolex fan boys say that sort of thing. They have to. They could never admit that Omega is now right up there with Rolex in terms of quality. They've spent twice the price of a SMP on a Sub, so need to convince themselves that it's twice the watch. It isn't. The 2500D is an excellent movement. I bought mine last Christmas and it ran 3.5 secs / day fast for about six months, but settled down to -1 secs a WEEK. Get it serviced regularly and it'll last a lifetime. Enjoy.

I've had several Seamasters and they have all been bulletproof as well as accurate. Years of flawless everyday wear proved it to me. I only replaced one with another when Omega came out with a new style that grabbed me. I chose Omega over Rolex initially as a rebellion against the Wall Street tradition of Rolex and came to admire Omega in the process. I'm done with Wall Street but not Omega! The only change has been my move from Seamaster to Speedmaster. :) IMG_2328.JPG

Thanks everyone for assuaging my concerns. I assumed they were unfounded but after spending some time (too long) in the Rolex forum I was beginning to question myself. Personally I don't think it matters what brand you are wearing, Omega, Rolex, Seiko, Oris, Citizen, etc., as long as you enjoy your watch is really all that matters. I'm glad to know the reliability of the Omega can stand up with the best of them.

I know there are many (most?) Rolex owners who feel the same way. But there are clearly others who think anything other than a Rolex is unworthy, and they appear almost desperate for people to notice which watch they are wearing. If someone happens to notice my watch and pays me a compliment, I'm thrilled for that. But I don't need or expect it. I've found that owning and appreciatiating my Seamaster is a very personal thing, and the satisfaction I get from that is not reliant on the opinion of anyone else.

In fact at this moment if I were to get another watch it wouldn't be a Rolex, but probably a Speedmaster. They are really growing on me the more pictures I see. :)

Glad to be a part of the family.

Compromise, hell! :) Wrong size NATO but I was just trying it on for the look to decide if I'd get the official Omega strap. They're kind of spendy but worth it if you like NATOs.

That's a nice thing about Omega. It stays a little under the radar, and I'm fine with that. Watch people will notice one, but Average Joe won't. At worst, he might say "Nice watch. Is that a Rolex?" :) ::stirthepot::

That's the best looking Seamaster Omega ever produced imho. My first Omega was the Seamaster 2220.80.00 and I still have it. I went with blue because it was what they had and because the blue perfectly matched my firm's colors. But this latest iteration of the Seamaster in black really knocks me out.

And there's the answer to your question.

I have Rolexes and I have Omegas. My 1967 5513 with a 1530 movement is actually more reliable than my 16750 with the 3185 movement. Both are equalled or bettered by an Omega Geneve with a 1012 movement. Frankly, as far as accuracy goes, I think my 145.022 with an 861 inside is my most accurate watch.

Despite many claims to the contrary, the accuracy of a mechanical (and particularly vintage) watch isn't really its main selling point.

Edit to add: you said you hoped to keep the watch for decades with regular service ... well, the 16750 is 26 years old; the Geneve is 45; the 145.022 is 47; and, the 5513 is 50 this year. Look after your watch and it will last longer than any other comparable machine.

Ever since I saw that scene in Casino Royale I have tried to pronounce Omega just like Bond. "Oh-mee-ga."
