Is it not generally accepted that the Don Draper Seamaster, i.e. a Seamaster DeVille unishell, black dial was never actually produced in that configuration, but actually just with white/silver dials?

This is currently on eBay. I'm a big fan of tropical dials, but not on dress watches so I'm not in the running for this. However, the font looks correct , serifs are there, minute markers look good, text colouration looks fine. This looks original to me.

That one does look correct, I think it’s the black dial with cross hair that you can’t get.

Ah I think you're right. It's the black dial DeVille with crosshair that wasn't produced. Good shout.

It looks to be heading for a decent price anyway.

Correct, black dial with cross hair was never produced. I have a black dial DeVille which I assumed is the original when I got it. After doing some research later I realized that I was very lucky to stumble on the rare black dial DeVille.

I wonder if the price is rising because it is tropic black or just because it is black.

Here is a few old photos of mine..
