I know, I know..if it’s too good be be true, then it likely is.

First of all, huge thanks to all of you who donate your valuable time (!) here on OF to share your vast knowledge, passion and very much appreciated expertise. I’ve been lurking for 2 months and have recently bought my first vintage Seamaster.

In my quest for a vintage De Ville dress watch, I came across this and was hoping to get your thoughts. Dealer offers full refund/return, which is nice, and says it has been serviced (grain o’salt claim, but I’m a reasonably trusting soul!). Asking US $850.

I really value your thoughts. Thanks so much. A virtual toast to you all.

    Michael

Looks OK. Not exceptionally good but nothing exceptionally bad either. Crown a bit thick but OK.

Did she say the same about the watch?

BTW: I missed the broken second hand. Not much to replace though.

Think it may be all there? (Again, something else the wife remarks occasionally!!).

Nice clean watch, cal 563 is quick-set date which is a plus.

Tail of the second hand does appear to be missing.

Dealer asking price is not unreasonable (would certainly like it better at $750) if they can show proof of service and or offer a warranty.

    Many thanks!

I’ve inquired a bit further based upon your sage advice and observations. I’m really grateful for the assistance. (I suspect I should take more seriously the suggestions to be more patient!).

What a great community you OF folks have created over the years - and continue to evolve. Really quite spectacular.

An addendum: I contacted the dealer. Here’s his (pretty solid) response:

“You’re right about the second hand. I do have an original in stock and I can replace it. We bought the watch like this and serviced it last month and put it back like this. We should have replaced it already. The watch comes with a warranty card for one year from our shop. We did a complete full disassembly, cleaning, oiling, timing and adjusting for accuracy. the case was gently polished and cleaned and a new strap added.”

If you don't mind my unsolicited advice: offer that $750. If he says no, there is no harm in asking, maybe taking a night to sleep on it, and see in the morning if you still want it bad enough to pay $850. You and I are newbies, some of our wants do come and then go just as quickly. This isn't a rare model, what are the chances someone else will walk into his shop in the next 48 hours and plunk down $850 without dickering with him a little. Pardon the intrusion.

If the Seller is wise.......he will take that from you

Make certain the second hand is replaced...and the warranty in place

Personally I think it is fairly priced, at the figure you offered

    Wear it and enjoy it

He accepted!! So pleased, and as I’ve mentioned, I’m really grateful to all of you. Second hand swap out and warranty included!

That’s 2 vintage Omegas in as many months. I suspect this is normal...!?

Foremost, though, it’s a dedicated group of enablers. How perfect!
