Saw this in an FB group, a member is selling it as a ”rare vintage watch”.

Can’t imagine this is a real one, but would be a interesting model if it left Omega like this.

And if I’m wrong and this turnes out to be a unicorn or some sort of special made configuration I am of course sorry but happy to learn 😀

Seamaster Piepans are very real, and very rare

There are 6 variants in total, I own three of them:

But the watch in the OP is surely not one of them? A later case shape and what to my eyes look like redialed text... I hope this isn't the second generation of fake step dials we're seeing.

I was thinking the same

To preface, I know very little of these, so take this thought with a grain of salt: I don't think the case shape totally rules this out. It looks to me like a large hippocampus 2975 case, which was only produced in 1958 and would have had a cal. 500/501. The pie pan seamasters were made in the same period from what I recall of Desmond's essay.

That being said, I have never seen a solid gold 2975 and almost all the steel/two-toned ones I've come across have some dial issues. Could be a swapped dial or could be an uncommon variant. I do share the redial concerns though.

The honest answer is I’m not sure in the OP watch’s case because there are too few data points really, there are two non date SMPPs that I’ve seen and both have different cases, one of which was a legit dial in an incorrect Seamaster 2849 case, but it was an 18k dial in a 14k case which is the odd mismatch that SMPPs typically are, while the other one was a correct non date case but in 18k. There are both stepped and non stepped non-date SMPP variants and the OP dial does look like the last one I’ve seen.

Desmond’s essay was correct to the best of available knowledge when it was published, SMPPs were not all made at the same time though, I’ve got a range of dates from 1953 to 1958 among my three on the extracts with the full rotor 2849 being the 1958 one.

The other thing I should mention based on the extracts I’ve received is that Omega does not have a record of SMPP dials being fitted to specific watches, from their perspective these are just gold Seamasters with 35x or 50x Calibre movements and the records show nothing special in that respect. The individual types do come from seemingly quite narrow serial ranges, and the delivery locations are weird but rather consistent in their weirdness.

How about the Swiss Made placement? To me it looks rather odd.

I’ll have to find the pics I’ve saved of the last one which may take quite a while

Thank you all for sharing your opinions, my initial concern was that I have not seen this stepped pie pan dial in this case before. As well as I'm also not to convinced about the dial being original.

I'm not looking to buy this just wanted to shed some light on it and gain some knowledge from the expertise on the forum.
I have asked for more and better pictures but did not get any response from the seller.

With that being said I am no expert by any means and there is always that one chance Omega did produce this one.

Looking forward to see some pictures of the watch you are referring to @dsio

Did you ask about the price by chance?

Seems like the seller is asking for something like $700~, based on comments. They did not reply to my inquiry as well. Buyer beware!

😁… right.

I think you’re missing a 0

Thats exactly the point I am trying to make, seems like they are fishing with a super low price to trick unsuspecting people. They are refusing to put the price in the post and making people PM them for pricing instead. This combined with no caseback photos, is weird. IMO they dont even have the watch and trying to trick someone into quickly paying for a "steal".
