I'm guessing this dial has been refinished (it seems to be the best assumption to make nowadays!), but I'd welcome comment. The watch, in general terms is in very good shape, clean 344 movement, working nicely - but there seems to be a film of varnish over the whole dial. As it's from 1954, I'd expect any varnish to be yellowing and showing signs of age. But this is clear. Evidence of a refinish?
No. That looks original to me. Edit: Swiss made looks quite big. But could be the magnification of the glass?
+1, there is some normal distortion in the crystal. A "film of varnish" is exactly what should be on the dial. There is a little bit of print loss, which is normal for these. Nice sharp example, gatorcpa
Yes, perhaps someone did have a punt at cleaning it (not me!). Thanks, all, for expert eyes. I have successfully polished the hands now, look much better than I dared hope they would. The varnish looks quite wrinkled, which is really irritating; less noticeable in the picture, as one is viewing straight on. Damn. As soon as you move off axis, though...
Here's mine: I'm crazy about it. Pic taken at 16MP so you can zoom in and see what dial should look like. And here's a Near Nos:
