View attachment 1432935 View attachment 1432936 View attachment 1432935 Hi there just joined forum , my hobby is metal detecting and to be honest I know nothing at all about watches , I was hoping if possible if anyone could put a rough date and type of model it is on this seamaster watch I dug up on Wednesday , I don't want to open it unless necessary , the photos are not great and the condensation under the face makes it difficult to see, but if anyone can help then please do .
Thanks in advance.

Hi,

you must open it for 2 reasons:

1) to identify the model by the numbers inside the case back

2) to let the moisture out (urgently!!) - when the case is open put the watch (face down) into a box with rice grains - this helps you to get the moisture out.

The shape of the lugs narrows it down to a handful of references (mostly 1950s), but I wouldn't want to guess without having at least a bit more information. And frankly, beyond idle curiosity, I don't see the urgency in knowing the precise reference number. To do anything with it, you'll need to open it up. Just be patient, and post more photos of the movement, serial number, and engravings in the case-back when you get it open.

Where the Lugs connect to the case body there is a small shaved angle on each, hard to notice, but none the less the shaved angel is there. Many of 1950's and 60's and so on do not have this shaved angle aspect. I sense a 1949 case here! Just me shooting in the dark.

If I am understanding you correctly, several 1950s cases have that feature, e.g. ref 2846 (see my photo below from an old sales listing). However, I don't believe the OP watch is a 2846, the bezel and lugs don't look quite beefy enough.

Granted. But I also noticed the lug on front is gold plated and the lugs on back is not gold plated. Seriously sense this is a 1st generation

Again............Just putting in a guess at it to see in time if my instinct was right. Cheers!

Def not a 2846 since the OP's watch has a screwback, while the 2846 has a snapback

Whatever it is, if it’s been sitting saturated in the ground for decades it’s now junk.

ps my guess is circa 1960 based on the caseback. The bumpers mentioned above don’t have that back.

Agreed on this - small hippocampus started in 1958ish. Not sure ref, could be 2992 but this doesn’t look like a jumbo. Can’t even tell if it has a date 😲
