Seamaster 2849 4SC - wrong hands - replace or keep them?

Dear Community

Since my last post got taken down I try Tracht out again to the forum. I just want to ask for the forums advice regarding a recent seamaster purchase.

I am based in Germany and I purchased a loved and worn Seamaster 2849-4SC. The only problem that I see is that someone replaced the hand with wrong set of hands during its long life. And it also has a small crack in the crystal.

So since it does need a service anyways because of the crystal and the not recently serviced movement I was wondering if I should get the wrong hands replaced by dauphine hands and a matching second hand or shell I leave the others on there? What do guys think?

I know it’s going to be hard to find period correct silver hands for a „black dial“ seamaster 2489 with silver indices. But may be someone can recommend me a way how I could get some or may be also if possible just recommend a company that might produce similar hands today with which my watchmaker could replace the other ones that aren’t fitting the watch all to well.

Or do you think that it could also be possible that a licensed omega watchmaker could order some replacement ones from omega itself?

I hope this post is align with the omega forum rules, since I am only asking for advice and opinions on the matter of the wrong hands and I am not trying to buy hands through this general part of the forum.

Thanks upfront for your help. ✌️

Certainly seek out correct hands if you want vintage watch satisfaction.

There are those Forum members here who can advise you better than I can about correct hands.

Looks like a nice project. It could take some hunting, but it will be worth it in the end.

Nice starry night patina on your watch. Here are dauphine hands on my 2849 with gold furniture. They should not be too hard to find I would ask watchmaker to find them you need correct length and correct hole sizes they will know
I would try to find vintage handset as new hands will not suit the dial patina. They can add matched painted lume matched to the marker radium dots
Nice watch you can wear as is until you find something.

I would like to have vintage watch satisfaction.

At least in some parts and the fitted hands aren’t giving me that satisfaction, although they are not „new“ judging by the looks of them.

Thank you for acknowledging the nice patina on the dial. That’s why I decided to go for it, despite the incorrect hands. It’s the first time I went for a watch that still needs cosmetic work done and not only a movement service.

And I think you are right and that I should try to find vintage once. So they will fit the rest of the vintage Charme of this watch.

But I don’t know about matching the lume to the almost deteriorated lume plots on the indices. If my watchmaker says he does stuff like this I will think about it but for know I am focusing on finding a new set of hands. Who knows what infill come up with on this hunt… hopefully some vintage once with already some patina or so…

Thanks for your advice so far! 😎🙌

And btw. That’s also a lovely watch of yours and a Nice condition of your black dial.

And haha I am happy that I came across one with an even patina and silver indices. I also really like the once with gold indices/gold specs but since I almost never wear any gold jewellery and only silver or white gold the spec set on the new acquisition fits my jewellery profile a little better 😅😉

So since the way to go seems to be to replace the hands I was wondering if anyone could help me out with distance from the centre pinion to the outside of the minute hash marks.

May be someone can provide me with that information so I can determine the right size of hands for it. It’s a calibre 503. and on the caseback it states ref 2849 4 SC.

Would be amazing if this forum/someone in this forum can provide me with those measurements before I visit my watchmaker at somepoint during this or next week ✌️😎

The movement caliber determines the correct hands. Set up eBay saved search for Omega cal 503 hands, I believe that handset for cal 500 501 502 503 would be same

This listing shows a set but gold not silver. It shows measurements.

https://ebay.io/m/OTBX0j

Also keep eye on OF Watch parts and accessories things pop up there too.

And a watchmaker will have resources and might be best bet.

Good luck!

so cool, love the wabi sabi. replace 😀
Those hands are indeed a pretty wild replacement 😅 the more I look at them, the more off they seem. I thought may be I could get used to them but they don’t fit this watch at all 😂

thank you very much for the link. I searched eBay but this offer didn’t show up in my search - but it’s probably because of the different locations we are at (Germany and usa search results might differ) 🥴😉

Only bad thing is that I now have to guess the exact length of the seconds hand - since this wasn’t placed perfect align with the 0 of the ruler. 😇😉

That would be great if you are willing to do that. May be it will be of help/may be makes it possible to guess the exact length and confirm that that hand should be around 21mm in length.

I reached out to a guy who sells watch parts on eBay. He has a seamaster hands listing for the calibre 503 and may be he can confirm the measurements/tell me the measurement of the hands he has listed. May be the length of the minute and hour hand are the same as in the other listing and so may be the second length will be confirmed. But could also happen that he won’t answer me at all 🤗😉
