I bought 2 black dial Seamasters last week and this one arrived today. This one was listed for 600€. Ref. 14779, cal 552, 19mil, 1962. The seller could not confirm that it is original so that could explain the low price. I bought this anyway and still I don’t know for sure if this one is good or not since I couldn’t find any sample that has the same reference.
  • The scripts are thicker than how I thought they would be. (Omega Automatic)
  • hourmakers are white but text is yellow.
  • The scripts are not gilt but look like printed.
I’ll bring it to my watchmaker tomorrow to have a closer look at the dial (he seems skeptical about it) but I still want to hear opinion from other members here. Thank you for your opinion.

Here are photos from seller:

Well, my watchmaker just laughed at me for buying a cheap, redialed watch 😁. Gonna return it soon 😉

It happens now and then, just part of the game. But I would only buy it if I know I can return it 😀

Looking at those macros I would say it is original, your watchmaker would laugh at me too 😅

The hour markers have been removed. They did this to clean and repaint the dial, then reattach the hour markers. But welding the hour markers to the dial is tricky, and they often leave gaps between them. So, it’s best to remove the dial for inspection.

Which country did you buy it from?

I would guess a relacquer instead of a redial but I am usually an optimist

I returned it already and expecting the refund. Anyway, the seller couldn't confirm the originalty of the watch is a hint. Plus, the loose hour markers indicates that they have been removed. So I see no reason to keep the watch. I'm expecting another black dial Seamaster from Japan. It should be here next week.

How can you know that?! Exactly. Some time it's good call but almost all the time it is high risk for a black dial, even from Japan.

There is only one guy who gets good results and he is in Vietnam

He can also do good relacquers so it could go either way

I didn’t see the results up close but I’ve read about his approach, he was pretty open

Thanks to him its no longer a simple thing differentiating original dials from redials

Would you mind revealing who? If he's open about it I wouldn't think he'd mind.

The first one I would have bet it was not reprinted. The writing, the serif, everything looks so good.

Picked this up over 10 years ago, gets very little wrist time unfortunately. 500 caliber from 1958. I also have the original Omega paperwork, I will try and post a photo when I can of the paperwork.

I don't know about hour markers, but IMO those writings are original, not reprinted.
