Screws loose in Speedy Pro

I bought a Speedmaster pro from a reputable USA company about five years ago. About three years ago I was in Scotland on a drinking bender with friends and accidentally fell down outside and knocked my Speedy - the bezel came loose. I put it on myself at the time, but over the years it would occasionally come loose. A few days ago I looked down and it was missing completely, and I couldn’t find.

Since it has been about five years since I bought it, and since I wanted an original bezel, I sent it into a reputable watch repair person here in Spain in Barcelona. They sent me some photos during the quotation phase and said the back coming open pretty easy and inside the two screws, which I assume hold the movement, were basically free.

the watch has never been serviced before and I bought it new, so I was surprised the screws had basically come out. Is this something that could have started with the bump I gave it, or do they sometimes simply work themselves loose?

I'm squinting real hard here trying to believe those screws were floating around the case and the watch still worked. My instinct is to call BS on this watchmaker. But the reason why they would claim this is beyond me.

There's no way to know the answer based on that one photo. A watchmaker who handled the watch would certainly know better.

You are correct, you can't know based on the photo. But I can tell you that there isn't enough vertical clearance inside the case back for those screws to come completely out with the case back in place. So yes they were loose, but not "on the loose"...

And I find these screws loose on Speedmasters all the time, so it's not unusual, and not result of any impact.

Ok thanks. Yah they said sometimes they work themselves loose, so maybe that was it. All the other photos they took and sent me seemed fine, I was just surprised they were loose as I thought it implied the watch had been opened before, which it hasn't as far as I'm aware.

Got a non-working Helbros diver, and this is why it wasn’t working

Dial foot screw. Sometimes they do creep out if there is enough clearance….but they shouldn’t.

Sorry I had to laugh. "Drinking bender in Scotland" I thought only us Scots did that.

Nope, Canadians in Scotland do it too! I was walking the West Highland Way at the time!

Based on your initial post, it seems you were not walking all that well... 😁

This was at night! But yes that’s true, the scotch won that night.

If the screws can't come completely out, and the dust-cover is still in place (with the nipple in contact with the case-back), it doesn't seem like the movement is in too much danger.
